Probably because his record in 4 years (at UL) against ranked opponents is 2-1. I think he is going to be a good coach, but Texas is reaching a bit here. We really don't know what kind of Coach Charlie is at this point.

That's a fair point, but he did beat a bunch of bowl-eligible teams, and rebuilt a Louisville team reeling from the Kragthorpe era. And it's not like he's not accomplished. He sustained last year's success with a QB that he recruited. I think this is as good a hire as any Texas could make, as they overestimated how desirable that job actually was.

The Texas name carries more weight than you are wanting to acknowledge. I'm not saying they are in a great spot, but the amount of talent in the area alone, makes it a very easy fix. I also think Charlie really wanted out of UL. I know there is a lot of hubub about Strong mad at UL fans for being terrible, but Bridgewater is leaving, their QB's next year are awful. It was going to be a rough year and moving to the ACC could make it a 3 or 4 win season. Charlie had to move now or ran the risk of dying at Louisville.

Maybe, but the timing and circumstances of the opening made it less than ideal to find a top-tier candidate.

That's a really smart move by him then. I think he could dominate at Texas.

Strong is a home run hire. He will have Texas as a consistent top 10 defense,

Well, let's wait to see who he hires as his DC. As we have seen at LSU- Coordinators can be all so important to success.

At least Strong can evaluate talent properly. Maybe this time UTa won't look at a player like Manziel and see him as a cornerback....

I think it depends on what you are looking for. The biggest question to me is if you are talking about MB going forward or MB when he was hired 16 years ago.

If it is going forward then Strong is the safer bet if for no other reason than Mack had run his course at Texas. He reminded me a lot of RC Slocum at the end, a great guy and good coach who had accomplished a ton but in the end he just had been bypassed by others with little hope of catching back up. Strong is a solid hire and someone different so that gives him the benefit of the doubt as an improvement.

If we are talking about MB when he was hired it is hard to take Strong over him. Mack turned around a flailing Texas program in short order and reeled off 10 win seasons for a decade. His recruiting in the '00s was ridiculous. He understood how to maximimize every advantage he had at Texas and expanded the brand in a way never seen before. His flaw was only winning on NC and 2 B12 Championships but mainly that was because he had so much trouble with OU and blew it in some B12 Championship games.

That is a VERY high bar for Strong to jump over, especially because Texas doesn't have some of the advantages it previously did exposure wise and A&M's SEC move has changed the game. He also isn't a fraction of the media guy that Mack was. So he has to get it all done on the field and that's easier said than done.

Strong is a very good coach. He's a guy I liked before we hired Sumlin. He's not without question marks though. His biggest accomplishment was that Sugar Bowl win which was great, but if there was ever a team that mailed it in at the end of the year it was UF last season (even the fans didn't show up). He also only won 1 Conference Title there in spite of playing in a very weak AAC/Big East. Many forget that Papa John has put a lot of cash into the Louisville program and the AAC is a freaking joke now. What Mack did at UNC was more impressive.

Is Strong overrated? I don't know. Is he a good hire? Yes. It will be intresting to see if the BMD and others stay out of his way and let him do his job. I am also curious as to just how much time they are willing to give him to right the ship. Politics plays a large part of that job and I don't see that changing overnight. It's gonna take a complete culture change for that to happen. Is Strong the guy for that? That is the real question.
