Why not? Has to start somewhere. I doubt he'll get a P5 gig without even being a coordinator.

He does have to start somewhere, but he probably doesn't want to start somewhere that the entire staff combined gets paid roughly what he gets paid as a Running Backs coach.

Would be ironic if ULM was more willing to pay in public funds to get their head coach than LSU was willing to use private funds to get theirs

Frank Wilson - ULM finalist

Good. I'd like to see what he can do as a head coach.

Some day, maybe not too far into the future, LSU will need a head coach.

I'd like to think Frank Wilson, who's been at LSU since '09, will be a candidate when that happens.

He'll need experience for that to happen, though.

This is what happens when you appoint a search firm and an ex player committee to hire a coach. They have a guy who's never called a play or defense as a finalist in a place where assistant coach salaries are at rock bottom.

What does that mean? He'll have to bargain shop for coordinators, since he can't do it himself.

Hopefully they have several finalists to choose form.

Dabo Swinney is doing solid over at Clemson

Dabo Swinney was one of the first coaches to get his coordinators $1 million+.

He's not really a fit for Tulane, but the finances would work out.

He'd go from $670K to $1.4M, and would be given an allotment for assistants.

Wilson probably doesn't want to take a job where he could not hire skilled help. That's why he's not interested in ULM.

That's my point. ULM needs somebody who is a guru or cutting edge and doesn't need high priced assistants. Being a good recruiter isn't going to be enough.

Right.

If we agree that this is the case, then he's better off staying at LSU until a MW or American program comes calling. He'll be able to afford most of what he wants there.

Rare correct use of irony on TD.

Upvote.

Probably for the best that he isn't interested in ULM. It's where coaches come to die!

Turned it down per Jimmie Smith at NOLA.com

https://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2015/12/lsus_frank_wilson_a_finalist_f.html#incart_story_package

Wilson makes more money as Asst Coach at LSU than HC at ULM...
