LSU, the coaching talent pool is shallow

LSU is about to realize that after Herman there are few realistic names that get a fan base excited. Look at some coaching searches at big time programs the last few years and see how far down the list schools like UF and Tenn had to go. UF got turned down by Hugh Freeze and Tenn had Jones at about 4 or 5 on their wish list. Also, Strong was not #1 on Texas's list.
Some LSU poster said in the "being honest" thread a week ago he was "scared of what may happen after Miles", and that is a reasonable fear. Look at LSU football before the Saban/Miles era....it's damn ugly.
Who is the REALISTIC homerun hire after Herman? I don't know if there is one. There was not a long list of homerun hires in SC's search last year. After Herman turned down SC the next hot name seemed to be Kirby Smart.....after Smart there just really wasn't a hot, perceived to be slam dunk hire. It doesn't matter that it was SC looking, it could have been UF again or even Texas and those two names would have been at the top for those schools too.
Good luck LSU, you'll need it......you are a non-Herman hire away from returning to the '90s.

it just doesn't always work that way. Plenty of guys who could succeed at LSU.

Strong was a big name. It's really easy to forget how successful he was pre Texas. Sure they wanted Saban but how far down the list could Strong have been?

There is no realistic homerun including Herman. Charlie strong and James franklin were two very hot coaches much like Herman. They both may be looking for employment at the end of the year.
There have only been three "home run" hires in recent memory. Saban to bama, Urban to Ohio St. and Harbaugh to Michigan.
There have been many Tom Herman's over time. Hell Briles and Sumlin are two from the same school. Bryan Kelly and Butch Jones from Cinn.
Clemson promoted Dabo from a staff that was fired. That didn't look like a home run hire. It was.
LSU needs to get the best coach they can get, no matter the name. I don't care if it's a defensive guy or offensive guy. Just be a damn good recruiter. The reason, there is no exact science to getting a successful coach. If they recruit and don't pan out, you still have something to work with for the next guy. The worst thing you can do is hire a Archer, Coker, Brown in his later years, dooley, spurrier in his later years, etc. Guys that didn't keep the talent coming and it takes years to rebuild.

Yet coach O had less than a week to prepare for a game with the same talent that Less Miles had and the team did a complete 180 so gtfoh with your fear. Mickey Mouse could do a better job of coaching than what miles and Cameron had on display on a weekly basis. Don't matter who we hire LSU will be better off

You keep bringing up LSU from the 80s and 90s, so you obviously have no idea the difference in facilities and financial support for the coaching staff at LSU in 2016 as opposed to then. It's not even close.

Big difference between then and now. Mainly LSU has started to spend money on coaches instead of going cheap.

Miles had a 57% winning percentage when we hired him.
Saban had a 64% winning percentage when we hired him.
Dinardo had a 43% winning percentage when we hired him.
Hallman had a 64% winning percentage when we hired him.
Archer had never been a head coach before.
Arnsparger had never been a head coach before.
Currently...
Jimbo Fisher has a 82% winning percentage.
Tom Herman has a 95% winning percentage.
Larry Fedora has a 64% winning percentage.
Dan Mullen has a 61% winning percentage.
Jeff Brohm has a 72% winning percentage.
Willie Fritz has a 69% winning percentage.
Mike Gundy has a 66% winning percentage.
Bryan Harsin has a 74% winning percentage.
I literally just went down a short list of coaches. Outside of the top 2, everyone else on the list would absolutely take the LSU job. And every single one of those guys has a better winning % as a head coach than Les Miles did.
Bottom line, Les Miles was not a good hire. Skip wanted someone he could control who was not going to get calls from the NFL. Now, Les worked out at LSU for quite a while. But, he wasn't a good hire. He was a mediocre hire at best. A lot of that was due to timing.
Unless Joe Alleva just gets cute, we have a virtual 100% of hiring a head coach with a better resume than Les Miles had when we hired him. And there is a pretty good shot we could hire a guy who has had just as much success than Saban had before we hired him.

What outsiders fail to admit or see is the path LSU was going down with Miles. It was over for him and he had been declining for several years. LSU spent a ton of money on assistants to try to keep Miles afloat. There are plenty of coaches out there that can maintain/improve from where Lsu has been the last 3 years. Also home run hires make a splash but those don't always work out. Plenty of good coaches out there that could do great things at LSU given the resources. Herman appears to be the real deal but if you take a step back his 2 big wins are an overrated OU that has disappointed plenty of times in recent years and a FSU team in a bowl that had no desire to be there. The rest of the games were garbage opponents outside of Lousiville last year.

this is what was so frustrating during the pre-Miles fired saga in 2015 with all the "well who is avaialble?" crowd.
There are plenty of good coaches who can utilize LA talent. Thankfully, LA is a talent-rich state.
Also, side note, I didn't realize Brohm has a 72% winning %.

Yeah, there are tons and tons of coaches out there with good winning records at schools that can't compete with LSU in HC salary, assistants salaries, recruiting, facilities, etc. And just because those guys might not be the top guys doesn't mean they aren't good coaches that could be great at LSU.
It also doesn't mean that any of those are guarantees. My guess is that Jimbo is probably the closest to a guarantee of success out of all of those guys. But if he doesn't come, there are plenty of guys who've had good success at other schools. Just find one that doesn't talk like a moron and have clock management issues.
