University of Miami is probably where the legend began.

I gotta say I made fun of him as a head coach. I still don't think he is a great coach (but he is adequate), but this is a great hire just for recruiting. He will do a great job here IMO.

Fanatastic News, even with Miles at the
Helm, we ought to be in good shape with
our new coaching staff and our #1 2009
recruiting class. GEAUX TIGERS!

Wow.....just...wow.
When will it be enough? Is the minimum one more BCS or will two or three SEC championships do it? Can he overcome this by just winning 9 or 10 games every year for 3 or 4 more years?
Seriously...

Once again Miles is doing exactly what needs to be done and he still kinda gets labeled the buffoon at the helm. WTF? I love this hire,

Not saying I agree with guy, but Larry Coker has a BCS trophy so don't act as if there is no way to question Les.

Shame is'nt it Ace. If we win five titles with Les they'll say "But we could have won six with this other guy."

Coker took a team which was on the verge of a National Championship in 2000 and won one the very next year in 2001. Les took a very good class of young players and coached them up to a National Championship in 3 years. I'm not saying Les is infallible, but there is a huge difference between Coker and the hat.
So as not to get too far off topic, I'm super excited about Coach O. I really can't think of any better coaching adjustment at LSU than replacing Malveto with Chavis and Orgeron.

In no way am I trying to discredit head coach Pete Carroll and his accomplishments while at Southern Cal, but by all my estimates, it seems as if the Trojans program has been on an incremental decline since the departure of Ed Orgeron in 2004.
2001 6-6
2002 11-2
2003 12-1
2004 13-0
--------------------
2005 12-1
2006 11-2
2007 11-2
2008 11-1 (maybe 12-1 after tomorrow)
Weren't the last several years still Coach O's talent? I wouldn't call that a serious decline.
ETA: this is not to disparage Coach O - with his help, USC became a juggernaut, and they can still recruit off of that success. I am just taking issue with the article's opening statement.

Why is O considered such a recruiting guru?? I know he had a top 15 class at Ole Miss once but outside of that...??
Did this reputation of recruiting guru start while he was at USC?
Just being brief right now ...
Ed Orgeron's legend as a recruiter started when he landed Shaun Rogers at USC after the Paul Hackett staff had been fired.
Coach O wasn't sure he had a job, USC's program was a shell of what it once was and Miami and Florida State were hauling in bluechip California recruits right and left.
Rogers' father told Coach O: "I'm a lifelong Notre Dame fan and I don't want you recruiting my son."
Through all this, Coach O convinced Rogers he could make him a high NFL draft pick.
Pete Carroll wisely retained EO.
Orgeron, as much as Pete Carroll, gets credit for USC's resurgence from a stale program fallen from glory back to a national powerhouse.
