He interviewed for the AU job a few years ago. I think he has the resume to atleast garner some interest in the Nebraska,Kansas or at the very least Tulsa.

For those in the know, does he have any serious interest in being a HC or was the AU interview windowdressing and is he just content with being the DC at a major college program?

pretty sure kirby bases his job destinations on the number of supercuts available in each town.

Kirby certainly has interest in being a HC but I only see him leaving for an upper echelon program, not a Kansas or Tulsa. I think he would take the Nebraska job

I'm beginning to think he doesn't want to be a head coach. He might be the Bud Foster/Norm Chow type. He's making about $1.5 million a year right now.

To be honest, I think Muschamps lack of success hurts Smart stock. Just MHO

Didn't say they would, I said he'd probably take the job if offered. And they hired Bo Pellini, who was basically Kirby Smart at the time.

Why would he go anywhere. He coaches with saban til he retires then slides in.

I think he'll wait for Saban to retire then reassess things. He could have leveraged a decent job by now if he wanted to. Giving up 630 yards with more talent than he'll ever coach at any other school may give him pause.

The Saban tree hasn't really bore fruit yet. Not sure why people keep picking from there.

For the Dantonio and Jimbos, there are the Muschamps, Shurmurs, McDaniels, Dooleys, etc.

I get the vibe that he's waiting on UGA or Alabama at this point. At some point he might have to think about pursuing some smaller jobs or jobs outside the southeast if he wants to be a head coach. Those two are far from sure things for him.

Not really, Jimbo stayed on with Miles, then coached under Bowden, and Dantonio coached under Tressel so there is some separation there.

The idea that Kirby Smart's situation similar to Pelini's is wrong though. Bo ran a defense, Kirby presides over Saban's defense. I know people like to put forward the narrative that Kirby calls the plays or whatever, but their situations are pretty dissimilar.

Is he more Turner Gill or Derek Mason?

I would say neither.

Almost everyone loved Gil before he took the Kansas job. Mason was largely an unknown outside of the Pac 12 before he took the Vandy job. I don't see where Smart fits these comparisons.
