Is the past year and a half due to how good Herman is, or how good Greg Ward Jr is? The ones loss he has had in the past year and a half was against Uconn, when Greg Ward Jr didn't play. Question was posed as it related to Gene Chizik as well. When he had Cam Newton, national champs....the rest of the time, well, everyone knows.

Disclaimer...they weren't suggesting he's not a good coach or the success was due to Greg Ward Jr. They only asked the question. They also noted his success with multiple QBs at Ohio state after injuries required they go to both the 2nd and 3rd team QBs.

Just thought it would make for interesting discussion, and I never looked at it the way of Gene Chizik.

Brett Favre made Curley Hallman look good enough to hire.

The guy found three competent quarterbacks at tOSU and one at Houston. That's three more than LSU has had over that time period.

Cam Newton was/is a freak of nature, the 1st pick in the NFL, Heisman winner, NFL MVP, etc

Greg Ward Jr. is a good college QB.

Let's try not to compare the 2.

Let me ask a question to answer your question.

How good would Greg Ward Jr be in a Cam Cameron offense?

He beat Bama with a 3rd string QB starting his 2nd game.

Ohio state is all you have to look at.

He started the year with Braxton Miller who reinjured his shoulder in August then JT Barrett then Cardale Jones

Each one has extremely different skill sets and he morphed the offense every time. Scored no less than 42 points in POST SEASON PLAY with a QB who was a drop back big arm passer and had never started a game.

It's a compelling question in general, whether or not Herman is being overrated.

I think the calculation you make with Herman is if we can't get the kind of guy who has proven he can go toe to toe with Saban on his own, consistently (Fisher), we should go for the high risk/high reward pick (Herman). It's high reward because he looks to be the next Urban/Saban.

But then again, all this brings me to Dan Mullen, who is like a Tom Herman who has already proved it... but just never got as hot as Tom Herman because he coaches in the SEC west.

I'm not sure. But he was a 67% passer before Herman got to Houston.

Again, like I said in the OP, I'm not questioning his ability as a coach. The question was presented on the radio. I just brought it here. I agree with many of the points made here.

What he was able to do offensively at OSU says that the guy can coach. But if we can blame Miles for lack of QB development at LSU, we also have to give much of the credit for having great QBs at OSU to Meyer.

The one thing that gives me pause is the fact that the 1 game he didn't have Ward, he lost to Uconn.

Ward only started three less games at WR than he did at QB the year before Herman arrived.

The experiences of Dan mullen are different the Herman. Mullen had Tebow and Harvin and hernandez to run his offense at Florida. His offense hasn't been that great at state. Because he doesn't have all American players like he did at Florida.

Herman on the other hand had to go through 3 QBS at Ohio state and everyone knows how that went. Then he goes to Houston and has a former WR play QB and play it well. "Oh but he lost to Uconn" jimbo got killed by Herman last year and got killed by Louisville this year. coaches aren't going to win every game they play no matter who they play. Hell Saban has only done it once.

Ohio states qb play after Herman left last year wasn't very good.
