To be honest, the pay that these coaches are starting to get is crazy to begin with. If Saban were to get in the 10M range this will only serve to be a problem for college football down the road. Many programs will not be able to compete and quite frankly I am not glad this is happening. I am all for free market practices, but this will only harm college football in the long run.

But they absolutely can do nothing about it. Its all about what the perceived value is and if Texas believes (rightfully or wrongfully) that they will get a better ROI then they are certainly free to do that. CAPITALISM at its finest, Yeah Baby.

You dont really have to worry RockyMtn. Other than Malzahn and the occasional Miles when his head is not in a fog. No one can touch Saban and no one is worth the money that he garners other than Malzahn or maybe Miles.

Until their agent can negotiate from a point of 4 BCS championships, there is no next big coach

Unless they have language in their current contract that makes them the highest paid coach by $1 for winning a NC

While that amount isn't being deposited into his account, he's very much reaping the benefit as he'd personally owe it otherwise.

If it weren't that way, he wouldn't be Arkansas's coach, so it's a moot point.

How does anyone providing legal representation allow their client to be handcuffed by a condition like this?

And as earlier stated, win 4 Natty's in a decade and we'll match salaries, otherwise...

Here's the problem for many universities -- many coaches have stipulations in their contracts (THANKS Jimmy Sexton) that requires the university to pay their coach up to the highest paid college coach if they win the National Championship in any particular year. I'm pretty sure that Miles has (or, at least had) such a provision in his contract.

So, will it evolve into a situation where every NC coach will go up to the $10 million Saban makes simply by winning ONE National Championship?

Sabans contract will have a lot of unofficial financing linked to it.

Please give us an itemized list since you are so much in the know.

Also, didn't the NCAA just make rules saying that all aspects of a coaches contract must be kept strictly above board now? I would think this would be the very definition of lack of institutional control.

I agree, but even if it's eight it will be problems. Most coaches are adding the verbiage to be the highest paid coach if they win the crystal. 8 Million spikes the median way to high.

When will the pressure of earning 10 million a year exceed the pressure of winning?

IDK, ask LSU...both Miles and Les had this in their contracts
