How long will our next DC stay?

If we get a competent DC with HC aspirations, then my guess is no more than 2-3 years (e.g., Pelini). After all, he'll have exceptional athletes to work with and our D will be among the top 5 nationally (doesn't that sound refreshing?).

I could deal with 3 years. But I don't think Les wants a DC that's only going to stick around for a year.

Thoughts/comments?

I think that hiring a guy who may only be here for two to three years(successful) is absolutely what Les should strive for. He is an offensive minded coach who needs to hire the best DC he can whether the guy wants a head coaching gig or not. It seems to be the plan laid out by a guy like Mack Brown and it has worked well for UT. Every three or four years we should be asking, "who's next"?

If we hired Walker from UCLA he may only stay 1 year. In fact, that is the best chance we have to get Walker - he wants to get a HC gig and our coordinators are put on a fast track to get good jobs (muschamp, fisher, pelini).

IMO, those are the guys you want. They have extra incentive to perform well to try to get the future position.

...and you develop a reputation as being a high profile stepping stone on up to bigger and better things. Over time, it works well with, of course, the occasional bust, but things stabilize out ... as long as the central figure at the top stays in place to keep coordinating everything else.

If he is instantly successfull we'll be looking for another one in two years or less. That's the hazard of playing good defense.

if a guy can come in and get those kinds of results in a 2-year span, i could care less if he bolts for a higher position because LSU will likely have hardware to show for it.

thats an advantage w/ robinson; dude is done as a head coach and we could easily get 5 years out of him.

See OU, to name one prominent example.

I want a coach with asperations. That means they are going to work extra hard to move up. If a coordinator's expectation is to be just a coordinator, he will do just enough not to be fired.

Personally, if coaches are going moving to the NFL from LSU every four to five years that means we are doing awesome and I don't necessarily mind that.
