I don't know what's wrong here. I'm curious to know. TN is a good job from the outside looking in. There has to be something amiss we are not seeing.

1. The in-state talent base is shallow, so you have to recruit from other states like Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. All those states currently have Top 10 programs who can pick up a lot of the talent who used to leave for Tennessee.

2. The SEC East is a tough place right now thanks to Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina being top 10 teams and even teams like Mizzou and Vandy being decent. Add in SEC West match-ups against LSU, Bama, A&M, etc., and it gets uglier.

3. The talent on the team is pretty low right now thanks to Kiffin's thugs leaving and Dooley's subpar recruiting.

A coach would need probably 3-4 years to get back to competing with the big dogs and I don't see the Tennessee boosters being willing to wait that long for success.

Arkansas has all the same problems...although we might wait a little longer.

Bielema may not be splashy but I'm willing to bet TN would take him right now.

true but UT is still a better job than UNC. always will be.

Apparently not in Fedora's estimation.

This is the catch. A lot of influential folks at Tennessee have a late 90's mindset in a 20-teens world. Success at Arkansas and Tennessee is measured differently.

I think TN can be good again, but I don't think they can be great unless all the planets and stars align for a momentary spell. I see them like Ark or SC have been recently--that is a good team that can beat anyone on a given day, but can't do it consistently enough to win anything big.

But what seems to be going on with the coaching search seems to be a little more than unrealistic expectations. I'm guessing that coaches are not seeing an institution that is aligned for success. It they are going to achieve what they want to achieve, they are going to have to clean house and start over. The Fulmer thing, although I think Chavis would be stupid to go with him, may be good temporary choice until they get their shite together.

Not even close. UNC has it all. Great school, great recruiting, etc. They've just never taken football series. Once they do, there's no reason why they can't be a national contender.

your crazy, UT is a top 10-15 job, it can dominate tomorrow with the right coach and 1 or 2 recruiting classes

All top 10 programs are HC based. Bama will be a dumpster fire tomorrow when Saban leaves for Cleveland. It's all cyclical, and it's all based on leadership.

These fans running around expecting a HC in the next 5 minutes and a 24 hour news cycle are the ones creating the hysteria. Tenn hires a good coach all of this is forgotten in a week's time.

The competitive landscape has changed an awful lot in the last 15 or so years. Before TN could use their money to make a difference in things like facilities to their advantage. Not anymore, at least in any difference making way.

Of course coaches are extremely important, but coaches need raw material to work with, and the lack of a strong recruiting base is a serious disadvantage today. Just about every school today wants a piece of the pie and will fight like hell. Just look at the commitment the Carolina schools have made to become winning programs. Even if there is a down year, they can't exploit down programs like they once did.

Do great players leave these states anyway? Yes, but usually for programs that have been great in their lives. It's like I was when I was in high school and wondered why LSU never won big nationally. I'm talking about the late 60's, only 10 or so years past 58.

Under the current competitive landacape, I seriously doubt Neb will dominate again like they did in the 90's and it ain't just because their coaching sucks. What does TN have that distinguishes them from Neb other than prettier surrounding areas? Academics? Great sponsor like Nike? Recent trophies? What is going to distinguish them other than a coach saying I'm greater than Saban, Miles, Spurrier, Meyer, Stoops, etc.?

Perhaps Fedora realizes that he'd be stuck being bama's rival game every yr & that no amount of bitching to the league office would change that? At least we here at LSU would have one team voting our way (sarcasm)
