at first I thought Lincoln spurned us so we threw frick you money at Kelly to save face but the more we learn the more I don't think that was the case.

-The contract doesn't really seem all that insane. I'm not sure Kelly is taking less than what you supposedly offered Riley, especially when they share the same agent and you lose deniability.
-Again they share the same agent, are you really going to play ball with a guy you feel just negotiated a contract in bad faith with you?
-Morning guys are claiming LSU has the receipts to show this has been in play for a bit.

I think things point toward we worked this deal out with Trace weeks ago, we allowed him to use us as leverage while he negotiated a monster deal with USC.

No doubt. You simply DO NOT pivot and scramble and land Brian Kelley in 3 days. It's preposterous to even think.

After taxes, Kelly and Riley will make about the same.

There are a lot of very moronic posters that will simply pretend they didn’t melt like 4 year olds for the better part of Sunday and Monday.

All signs point to this deal being in place for awhile as you stated.

I think that's the way it played out as well.

After cost-of-living, Kelly will be in better shape, with an actual fanbase.

I'm glad people are finally coming to this realization

We were told at the very beginning of this search, the smoke screens would be wild and abundant. That they were

Plus, if you're number one is Riley, I just can't see your number two being Kelly considering they are polar opposite coaches

oh I mean I was pissed when the Riley to USC news dropped and we looked like we got spurned.

the fools are the ones that do this for a living (Rabalais, Guilbeau, Scona) that insist LSU was in scramble mode

Once Riley to USC was announced I figured since that had obviously been in the works for a while LSU wasn't really after him.

Riley, USC, and his agent just used the LSU smoke to literally catch everyone off guard. OU was really screwed in that whole thing.

Kelly is a really good hire, I just assumed he wasn't really on the table. Previously on this board I said he'd be a good choice.

After Kelly, you get into the danger zone, especially if Aranda/Kiffin weren't options. But if BK really was the guy all along, that Aranda stuff may not have really been an indictment on Aranda.

LSU didn't offer Riley IMO. I'm sure they talked to him and showed interest, but I don't buy that he was ever the target when it was all said and done.

You don't get Kelly in 2 days if you whiffed on Riley. And the "Kelly was the backup plan" school of thought is unrealistic. shite, even if he was the backup plan (highly doubtful) GOOD frickING JOB Woodward for landing a better coach as the backup for basically the same money. Kelly has the same upside as Riley with less risk IMO.

They reached out to him early in the process and went through the preliminary stuff. They circled back to him after Riley fell through and got the job done. Credit to Scott for that.

This hire was probably already done while we were all convinced Lincuck Riley was going to be our next head coach.

After the last two dumpster fires of seasons, LSU fans' heads immediately just go to the worst possible outcome, which is why we were also convinced Woodward shite the bed on the hire.

How long before Vol comes in and tells us he was working with Woody to create a smokescreen?

I think we agreed to provide the cover fire provided Armstrong agreed to our original deal and not pull a Sexton and come for money at the 11th hour when we had no other options or continue to negotiate with ND

I tend to think you’re right. BK was his number 1 choice. Only thing I’m not sure of is BK taking the deal. I think it was hard for him to leave ND. Wasn’t a slam dunk and Woodward was probably a little on edge. In the end it worked out but it wasn’t a done deal until yesterday.

That would also make sense.

I'm sure Kelly leaving money on the table is so that his assistant and recruiting budgets are massive.

Notre Dame lost to Cincy on 10/2.

O was announced as gone on 10/17.

I think Woodward reached out and the talks were hammered out in that two week window, which is why he made the move when he did.

Riley was message board smoke.

Kelly was always the whale.

A week ago Kelly said he did not envision himself ever leaving ND…Unless the fairy godmother came with a $200 million check. He would have never said something like that if he were in discussions with LSU. If, in-fact, he was in discussions with LSU and then he said that….Everyone would then know that the ONLY reason he left ND was b/c LSU paid him about 4x what he was currently making. I see no fault with him leaving ND for that reason…I just hope everyone realizes he didn’t leave ND b/c he was looking for a new challenge or wanted to compete in the SEC.
