Do you still take Herman if Aranda isn't retained?

The man made Alabama's lane kiffin his bitch and our defense has been lights out all year. Is hiring tom Herman and getting another new DC better than retaining O and Aranda?

YES. Jesus, why is this a question? LSU will continue to pay for elite DCs like they did under Les. Aranda is the MVP of the team right now, but the opportunity to get an elite offensive mind can not be passed up.

Out of all the potential head coaches we could choose, I feel like Aranda is most likely to stay if we hire Herman.
Not to say he won't stay if we hire Jimbo or someone else, but I think the previous relationship with Herman could help to keep Aranda.

I think Aranda is a genius and we will regret not making him head coach.

YES. Losing Aranda would certainly be a hit. He's without question the best DC in college football. But there are other DCs out there that are capable of complimenting a good offense.
I honestly think that hiring Herman actually gives us the best chance to retain Aranda. But, if Fisher gets the job and Aranda bolts, I'm picking up the phone and calling Pelini day 1.

Unless you take Arnada as HC, don't count on him being there but a season or two more. Someone will offer him a HC gig soon. O won't hang around either. It will probably be best to let the new guy hire his own people.

I for one would rather hire Aranda as head coach and bring in an innovative OC. This formula will result in a more stable program and more opportunities for championships. Offense is sexy but we all know the cliches for defense and championships.

Agreed... but on that line of thought:
Aranda without Herman>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Herman without Aranda.
By using a math principle (which I can't remember now) we can deduce that
Aranda>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Herman.

Depends on why Aranda is leaving
I want a coach that makes good football decisions. Retaining this defensive staff is a good football decisions. If Herman wants to give Aranda the boot then no.
If Aranda decides to take a HC job somewhere, well then what are you gonna do?

Herman would not give Aranda the boot....apparently they were roomates for a time and know eachother very well. On the other hand Aranda would definitely leave for a HC position if the right one.

O won't hang around either

Yeah, I agree. i don't see any scenario where we get Herman and he doesn't at least want to Keep Aranda.
Also Aranda is young enough to wait for the right coaching opportunity. There are a lot worse things than make over a million dollars at LSU.

Not to the level that is needed. There are very few DC's today operating on Aranda's level with talent. He's better than Pelini and Chavis because keeping the scoring down trumps yards given up. The #1 team who thrashed us last year and the year before offensively could only muster 1 TD and that was in the 4th quarter. That would not be a good trade-off. We need to build off of where we are which means keep Aranda no matter who the coach is. If during the interview process any coach comes in here and says he would like to bring in his own DC after seeing what Aranda has been able to do, it would be disqualifying from the start.
The purpose is not just to be able to score 14 or 17 points while still giving up 40 points to Bama. What would change there? This defense is #6 in scoring defense at 14.4 pts per game. They've only given up 9 TDs on the season so far and it should still be only 8, IMO.

Aranda is much more important and harder to replace than Herman.

Well said my friend. Not sure why people keep asking this garbage. Herman is a rising star. He will have a good staff. That's what good coaches do. They don't rely on great coordinators never leaving

He's as much of a rising star as Briles, Sumlin, RichRod, Gus, and any other person considered an elite offensive mind was at their jobs before their P5 gigs.
The hype surrounds a coach all the time. He is Dan Mullen if Dan Mullen would have gone to a mid major.
We complain about QB play but those guys NEED athletic QB more than anything to make their offensive go. Once Urban didn't have Chris Leak or Tebow on the roster he bailed on UF because he knew tough days was ahead. He also had Alex Smith at Utah.
Look at Mullen without Dax...so what's Herman without Ward? People say he beat Saban with a 3rd string QB...a QB that would have started tons of other places including LSU. Hell Huepel/Norvell blasted Saban with Trevor Knight...
He's a logical candidate. I get that. He should be mentioned as a potential for the job. But to claim he's the end all be all is overboard imo.

I believe he's not the kind of coach who needs his staff picked for him. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Herman's background or the Houston program, but he's doing a lot of really good things that, as a fan, I'd feel confident saying he will be very successful.
If you think his success is tied to one specific player or assistant, you're incorrect. Far from it, actually.
