Comparison: Fickell, Riley, Kiffin, Aranda, Napier…

Just to put some numbers to the discussion of 5 candidates I see mentioned, here are their total offense, total defense, and SOS rankings so far for 2021, in no particular order:
NAME — OFFENSE — DEFENSE — SOS
Aranda — 13 — 33 — 48
Fickell — 54 — 10 — 36
Kiffin — 3 — 100 — 4
Riley — 17 — 68 — 22
Napier — 47 — 66 — 82
My observations: Aranda has been quietly impressive, Kiffin/OM defense is trash, Riley/OU defense leaves a lot to be desired, I’m not sure Napier belongs in the discussion at this point.

ULL is 6-1 and only loss to UTa week 1.
These stats can't be control group when comparing candidates

Also look at his sos is you are going to throw out his record…man that Texas sure is a juggernaut

SOS, beyond head to heads and same opponents, is likely the only way to compare.
It’s not a perfect method, but it provides a bit more context to the discussion than just W-L numbers.

I’m not on the Kiffin train, but looking at your stats all he would need is a top DC. He could easily get that at lsu. Now the guy is a national contender based on those stats

So why hasn't he gotten it? It's not like his defenses are just bad at Ole Miss -- they've been bad everywhere. He's only improved a defense once, and he's only fielded an even halfway-decent defense he didn't inherit twice.
I put this together on Kiffin because I was bored, but it shows my main concerns with Kiffin. He turns offenses into powerhouses, but equally tanks the defenses.

Well considering he's only been at FAU and Ole Miss you're not really giving him a fair shake are you?
Last I checked when he was OC at Bama the Bama defense was complete juggernaut. He could easily hire the guys he needs and LSU can retain guys like Raymond who are extremely proven as coaches and recruiters.

And Tennessee...
And USC...
And Oakland...
In the year pre-Kiffin, Raiders were 32/32 offense, 18/32 defense (in points for and points allowed). In Kiffin's next year, they were 23rd offense & 26th defense.

Yes, 13 years ago. Bill Belichick was fired as the Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns.
Also that Oakland team was bottom of the heap BEFORE Kiffin was hired.

Yes, 13 years ago and today, the pattern of his teams are similar: elite offense, poor defense.

Jeff Grimes is an outstanding OC. Was great at BYU and has been great so far at Baylor. His wide zone run scheme is very effective and he’s excellent with QBs as well.

I'm not advocating Napier, but comparing SOS is not really an accurate measure unless you also adjust for the level of talent he is coaching.
If you put me at head coach of each of those programs, I'm going to get the most talent to come to Oklahoma and my teams there will be better. ULL is at the other end of that spectrum.

Alabama’s defense held up pretty well when he was the OC over there. Also our 2019 Tigers had a high power offense and our defense did pretty well too. Like I said I’m not on the Lane Train, but his defense and ability to lure a top DC and players improves drastically at LSU over ole miss

He also had Saban reining him in. When he has full control is when the defense seems to suffer. I'm not sure you can field a top level defense with his style of coaching. At least consistently. I also think he is a wreckless play caller at times which also reflects on why his team is one of the most penalized in football. My fear is he is a elite coordinator but a mediocre head coach.

Lets compare apples to apples with regards to Napier:
The Sun Belt aint the SEC
SOS has a whole different meaning when comparing the Sun Belt to the SEC
Total offense numbers is a totally different animal when you're playing Georgia defense types vs Arkansas St defense types

Enough of the Napier crap.

I agree, Aranda is looking like a good option. I think he would be a better fit than Fickell, especially when you look at the fact that Aranda was here 2 yrs ago and knows the recruiting trail here.
