Best Job rankings do not matter AT ALL

There is a very limited number of good to great coaches, and the number looking to change jobs in a given year is extremely limited. It's not as if there are a million good coaches available, the best will go to the best job, the 2nd best goes to the 2nd best etc.
Different coaches value different things and are just as capable of being irrational as anyone else. Their personal preferences vary wildly. So, Good Coach A thinks USC is better because his son wants to go there and he likes the culture of the West Coast. Good Coach B thinks LSU is better because he like Louisiana recruits and wants to be in the SEC. And that's pretty much it. Even if an objective ranking existed, the pool of candidates isn't anywhere near large enough to see any correlation whatsoever.
This is not even to mention that different AD's are also valuing different things which makes it even more of a useless exercise.
At best the only thing that matters are general tiers, and even that can have exceptions (eg, maybe the guy at Kent State thinks it's the best place on earth). LSU is in the top tier of good destination jobs along with a dozen or so other schools. They're not in the stepping stone tier.
Even if we had an infallible supercomputer that could objectively and indisputably rank the best jobs in the nation, whether LSU came out at #1 or #15 would make absolutely zero practical difference in a coaching search. None.
Tldr: LSU is a great job. Who gives a frick where it ranks

Most of the people who care where LSU ranks aren't LSU fans. Go to tRant and there are two Auburn fans blowing up a thread on this.

I think there are three tiers.
"Elite"- top 15-20 jobs
"Destination" - Most Power 5 jobs
"Stepping Stone" - we all know these
I think it's disingenuous to say a Mizzou or Maryland is practically as good as a LSU.

Agree with your tiers
Though there are still exceptions. VTech was certainly middle tier and is now borderline at best, but Beamer wouldn't leave for a top tier because he loved the place.
So it helps a lot but it's never a guarantee.

They're not, and this is off topic but Maryland is a program I would consider a sleeping giant. They are the Under Armour to Oregon's Nike, except they're right down the street from DC and the tidewater area, two places with mega talent, and not in bumfrick oregon. Wouldn't shock me at all if they were a powerhouse in 20 years

While I agree with everything you posted, the contract also makes a big difference for almost all coaches. If the contracts are relatively even, then they don't matter that much. However, 5 mil/yr vs 6 mil/yr can make a huge difference in whether a coach will come or not.

Yeah the money matters but usually the elite jobs for other reasons also have more money too.
New money jumping a tier like an Oregon is rare.

Gary Patterson at TCU agrees with you. Beginning to think he'd never go anywhere else. Upvote.

how about a little comic relief at the expense of a common rival

Maryland (the university) really isn't close to the tidewater area of Virginia.

Tiers:
1. Have championships been won there before?
2. Can you compete for championships there?
3. Can you win enough to change the culture to compete for championships there?
4. Can you win at all there?

You're "beginning to think" a guy who's been at his current job for 17 years isn't going anywhere?
Really stepping out on a limb there.

It's less than 200 miles up I-95 from Hampton to College Park
