You are in the SEC West now. You absolutely have to be able to play great defense in this conference. Outside of Auburn last year (which still played pretty good defense when it needed to) no one has ever had consistent success in this league with an offense first system. It won't work. And if you want to see an example of hiring an average coach thinking your program is big enough to build him up, see Mike Shula, Mike Dubose, Dooley, Ron Zook. Gene Chizik's in this conference are rare......very rare. The teams that have done well in this conference have hired great coaches and paid them big money....Miles, Saban, Petrino. Identify a can't miss coach and give them whatever they ask. To win in this league, your coach needs an NFL salary. Don't be afraid to offer Petrino, Bielema, Dantonio, Petersen, or Patterson 3.5 to 4.5 million. This is the most important hire in aTm history and if it is a bad one, you will fall to a MSU/Ole Miss level and struggle to ever come back up for air. You need a big name just to compete and be in the conversation. You need luck and tons of talent to ever win this league.
I agree with that mindset. But look at Saban's numbers at Mich St. They aren't great. Look at Mack Brown's at UNC. They aren't great although they were trending up at the end of his 14 yr stint. Les had never won the Big XII. My point is nobody is can't miss. Heck, we thought Fran was a can't miss. Fuuuuuuuck was that wrong!
But, we are contacting big names. We are gauging the interest but will likely go with Sumlin who is being recommended by many in the Texas football scene. I'm fine with Sumlin if we give him big money to hire his staff. I'm talking Chad Morris at OC, Larry Porter at RB, keep DeRuyter at DC

Better yet, look at Chizik's numbers at ISU.
Good points, Aggie.

LOTS of push to give Kirby Smart a look for the job as well.
Patterson should be the hire. I wouldn't hate Sumlin. People can complain about his record without Case Keenum (or the 2nd or 3rd string QBs that year), but the fact is that they guy has been an offensive chameleon. There's a reason Stoops jumped over the table to hire his arse to recruit and run Adrian Peterson once RC and his staff (including then OC Kevin Sumlin) were shitcanned for Franchione and Co. in 2003.
I like Smart as well, though I think he's an unknown commodity. That guy has been tied to Saban's jock since leaving Georgia, including a stint with the Dolphins. Have to wonder if Saban makes him great or if it's the other way around. Hopefully, some of you Bama guys can explain a little bit further about who is really responsible for those smash mouth defenses Smart has been fielding for the last 3-4 years.
Charlie Strong... I liked the guy before he went to Louisville and signed that ridiculous contract. Might have the mother of all buyouts at this point, and I'm not interested in overpaying for a guy that has gone 14-12 or whatever at Louisville.
Going to be a tough call, for sure. Wish we could have at least made a fly by on Urban Meyer before he took the Ohio State job. Who knows... we might have. It wouldn't surprise me to get rebuffed for the Buckeye gig in a seemingly down B1G.

He already gets $3M/yr plus extra incentives from boosters. He's Cow Town royalty. He isn't leaving. Also, concerns of the 4-2-5 in the SEC. I don't worry about that as much

Also did his GA at A&M and has made sure A&M knows that he's very interested anytime the job is available. But, so has Sumlin.

Well, if the rumors about those extra incentives are even partly true, he's never leaving TCU until they run him out of there when they become another also-run program in the Big 12.

Yeah, story is he has a pump jack or two just for himself.

The wife is an Aggie, I told her they were looking at Sumlin, and she got pissed. Said they needed to get someone that is familiar with the SEC, or has strong defense background. God I love having a wife that understands football

Which of those two credentials that Urban Meyer and Les Miles meet when they were hired by UF and LSU?

LSU already understood the philosophy needed to win in the SEC.. defense and speed on the line.. Miles is a Line guy who transitioned well because he recruited like crazy to get these guys. He understands and made it clear that the Defense needed athletes all over and made it a priority... All you have to do is look at our last 6 recruiting classes.
