Qb development is Helfrich's strength. Not saying I want him but that is what he is known for.

Harry How
Background
As most of us Cal fans know, Mark Helfrich is the offensive coordinator for the Oregon Ducks. Although Helfrich had no experience with Kelly's zone read offense, Chipper brought him aboard after the Dan Hawkins regime was dissolved in Colorado. While Helfrich has recently learned the Kelly offense, he has long been praised as a great developer of quarterbacks.

At Boise State, Helfrich tutored two-time Big West (remember that conference?) Player of the Year Bart Hendricks. At Arizona State he coached our good friend Rudy Carpenter as well as Andrew Walter, whose 86 career touchdowns and 30 TDs his single season were school records. His 86 career TDs broke John Elways Pac-10 record.

More recently we've seen his work with Jeremiah Masoli, Darren Thomas, and now Marcus Mariota. Wherever he goes (except Colorado), good quarterbacks emerge.

IMO, the best OC's have their "system", but they can adapt players to it or tweak it to fit the players they have.....Kiffin was/is an example of that. We need a coordinator that can do this. IMO, of course.

Everything he does is anti-defense and would put Aranda behind an 8-ball.

I understand your point, but I'm much more concerned with my OC moving the ball and scoring points, not setting up our defense.

Now of course, there are times in games where we want to play field position and also run clock, but for the most part, I want my OC to focus solely on moving the ball and scoring points. I don't want my OC worried in the back of his mind about pleasing the DC. Let Aranda worry about his defense. If we recruit depth on the D-line like we're supposed to, we won't get worn down in the 4th quarter.

At this point just give the OC job to Myles Brennan so at least LSU gets him

Oregon fans will tell you that he wasn't the main play caller this year. He only took it over at certain times like Sean Payton does. Matt Lubick did most of it.

Great. Then we'll become A&M. No thanks. You can't run 80-90 plays every game and expect your defense to be remotely fresh by November.

Helfrich doesn't solve our most basic issue: developing QBs
That's his biggest selling point.

Helfrich is a two time QB coach of the year.

I love this board. Nothing good that ever happened while Helfrich was at Oregon was due to Helfrich. Mariota was just a generational talent and Helfrich didnt recruit or develop him. Chip called all the plays while he was OC, so the offense was good because of chip. When chip left, it was Scott Frost/Mariota who was the reason the offense was still good. Now it's Matt Lubick.

I'm not saying he's the next best thing since sliced bread, but you have to give him credit for SOMETHING. He was at Oregon for 7 years and never had a bad offense. Can't just keep ignoring that.

It's true. This board, who have likely collectively watched little to no Oregon football, are experts on what happened in the program and have confirmed all Helfrich did was play Candy Crush for the entire time he was there while everyone else did the work

Mariota had 3665 yards followed by over 4454 yards and a Heisman - Both AFTER Kelly left. Get your facts right.
