a- Chizik
b- Mattison (Michigan)
c- Durkin (UF)
d - Gibbs (UH)
e - Pendergast (USCw)

Specifically, for open SEC jobs (or potential openings, such as USCe)

If I had a choice, I'd probably go to the Division II ranks before hiring 4 of them.

North Dakota State got that D.

Mattison was decent at UM. His schemes were stale though

Lulz at that list. I would go with the second c if I had to pick.

What's the story on David Gibbs' one year at Auburn? Seems he did pretty well, but, again, was only there one year.

Dude has done a terrific job with UH's defense, which says something considering their defense has rarely been good, ever.

Tubs fired him. I can't remember the details, but he wasn't very good. Granted, he was a lot younger, so he's not the same coach now.

Chiz is the only one I'd be content with. I'd want Orgeron over all of them. That's a shitty list.

Durkin and Pendergast are the only two I'd at least see some upside in....is the problem with Durkin that no one knows how much credit, if any, to give him for anything he did at UF, since Muschamp was "running the defense"?

Orgeron has never been a DC...has he? If you have a defense-first HC (Saban for instance), I could see him being fine, since he is an a-list recruiter, but if you have a coach like Sumlin or Malzhan it would be a disaster.

Mattison (Michigan)
Durkin (UF)
Pendergast (USCw)
Gibbs (UH)
Chizik

I know Chizik had decent defenses as a coordinator at Auburn and Texas, but weren't his defenses at Auburn notorious for horrible fundamentals?

No. Those D were the best in the country. But he had elite talent at AU and UT while a DC. He was a complete failure when he had average, to below average talent.

Clancy is the man. Extremely underrated. I'd take him back at USC in a minute.

I meant when he was HC at Auburn. I've seen AU posters on here before lamenting how his defenses blew at tackling and fundamentals during his tenure as HC.
