NFL interview tidbits from roto

Multiple league sources tell CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora that Patriots OC Josh McDaniels' candidacy for the Falcons' head-coaching vacancy is being "championed" by GM Thomas Dimitroff and top assistant Scott Pioli. Both Dimitroff and Pioli worked with McDaniels in New England. La Canfora suggests Dimitroff and Pioli's futures could be tied to whether or not McDaniels is hired. Rex Ryan is believed to rank high on owner Arthur Blank's candidates list, but obviously has no ties to Dimitroff or Pioli. If Blank opts for Ryan over McDaniels, it could create tension in Atlanta's front office.

The Bills and Falcons will interview Seahawks DC Dan Quinn for their head-coaching vacancies on Sunday. We had already known about the Falcons' interest in Quinn, but Buffalo's is new, and Quinn will have interviewed for every head-coach opening besides the Raiders once Sunday is over. He seems like a good bet to land one of the jobs. However, if the Seahawks advance through the playoffs and to the Super Bowl, Quinn may have to wait again. Teams typically like to have their head coach in place before February. Quinn is doing interviews with Seattle on a bye.

"Several sources" tell CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora the Jets will likely be the first team to name a new head coach this week. The Jets satisfied the Rooney Rule when they interviewed RBs coach Anthony Lynn, so they can hire immediately. As La Canfora notes, the Jets' GM search is "littered" with candidates who have ties to Doug Marrone, hinting Marrone will be owner Woody Johnson's head-coaching selection. Texans exec Mike Maccagnan is regarded as the favorite to replace John Idzik as Jets GM.
Marrone seems like the first domino to fall soon

The Bills have requested to interview Lions DC Teryl Austin for their head-coaching vacancy. Buffalo has also formally requested permission to interview Bengals OC Hue Jackson. Austin has no prior head-coaching experience and was the Ravens' DBs coach just last season. But he's made the Detroit defense elite with largely the same group of players from the previous season. Austin has now drawn interest from the Bills, Falcons, and 49ers. He'd satisfy the Rooney Rule, as well.

The Raiders have requested permission to interview Cowboys passing-game coordinator Scott Linehan. Linehan's contract is up and he did a fantastic job morphing Dallas' offense not only to play to its team strengths, but to help cover up a talent-deficient defense. The 2014 Cowboys ranked No. 1 in the NFL in time of possession and No. 2 in rushing offense. Linehan failed in a previous stint as the Rams' head coach, but St. Louis' front office was an utter mess at the time.
Raiders seem determined to get a retread with experience in losing

I can't believe the Raiders are going after Linehan.

Thanks for the post, but La Canfora is the biggest hack in the business. He's the one who just last week say that Bill Polian would be taking over as president/football czar of the Buffalo Bills. He's wrong much more often that he is right.

FOX Sports' Alex Marvez reports the Bucs interviewed in-limbo 49ers OC Greg Roman for the same position in Tampa Bay. Roman isn't expected to follow coach Jim Harbaugh to Michigan. He'll remain in the NFL to coordinate an offense, where he's being called a "hot commodity." Roman was the 49ers' OC for four seasons, and San Francisco finished as a top-five rushing offense during that time. But their passing game struggled for long stretches. Coach Lovie Smith seems to favor a run-first mindset on offense. Roman has also been mentioned as a "name to watch" for the Jaguars' OC job.

The Bills have requested to interview Colts OC Pep Hamilton for their head-coaching vacancy. Buffalo is casting a wide net in their search. Hamilton joins Bengals OC Hue Jackson, Lions DC Teryl Austin, Chargers OC Frank Reich, Seahawks DC Dan Quinn, ex-Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, among others to be linked to the Bills' opening. Hamilton called plays for the NFL's No. 1 passing offense in 2014.
I don't think the bills have any clue what they want to do right now

They were the only team that wasn't prepared for what happened.
Posted on 1/4/15 at 10:08 am to LSUSkip
They gave him that clause to get out his contract a long time ago, they shouldve alleast prepared for the possibility

To be fair, early on no one knows shite about coaching changes except who is being interviewed unless it's obvious like Muschamp to Auburn or Harbaugh to Michigan

The NFL is a little more trasparent because you have to request formal permission to it revue candidates from other teams

would be a laughably bad hire

words can't express how much I hope the Falcons hire Josh McDaniels

I guess what is not known is which college coaches have been interviewed since that can be done a little more under the radar. Or maybe no college coaches have been interviewed.

I don't think there's any college coaches that have NFL interest while also having the NFL interested in them

C'mon, there have to be rumors about Saban going somewhere.

Depends who La Canfora is talking about. Dude is close with Rick Smith of the Texans and has scoops on them nailed.

Dirt is starting to be thrown
quote:
Appearing on Sunday NFL Countdown, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported ex-coach Doug Marrone "stormed out of the draft room" when the Bills traded up for Sammy Watkins in May's draft. It's a display of an extreme disconnect between the coach and the front office. And it's not the only time Marrone, GM Doug Whaley, and CEO Russ Brandon butted heads. The three reportedly got into a heated argument on the practice field in front of the team and media during the season. As a result of the Watkins trade, the Bills are without a 2015 first-round pick. They also don't have a quarterback. Whaley is leading the Bills' search for a new head coach.
