Why hasn't his name been mentioned for a HC job?

I think that Smart was holding out for a major program. However, the UF hire will probably make him rethink that strategy.

He's still relatively young, but it does seem he may have waited too long. He was talked about for all the bog jobs a year or 2 ago, now not a peep. Big programs don't want to hire guys with no HC experience now, now matter how successful they may have been as coordinators.

When we hired Freeze, I wanted Smart. But our committee wanted head coaching experience.

Makes all the sense in the world now.

You just have to go prove yourself somewhere. Probably be a good idea for bama to replace Sabah with a good recruiter because most fail to replace the legend. Might as well recruit for the next guy.

Didn't he almost take the Auburn job before they hired Gus?

Normally, no, but what established coach is gonna want to follow up what Saban has done? Pretty enormous(not literally) shoes to fill. No one could ever live up.

I think the Bammers are so deep in the Saban delusion, that they take his advise and make Smart his successor. Hell, Saban wS pushing for Houston Nutt as his successor at LSU. Sexton may have been offering Saban a big check if he could pull that off.

Which is why they should probably just promote Smart and see if he can replicate or somewhat continue the success and momentum of the Saban era. Sometimes promoting a longtime assistant of a legend works (Tom Osborne is an example) and sometimes it doesn't (Ray Goff), but at least if he fails you're out of from under the "shoe filling" window when trying to land a new coach.

I don't know if Smart will be a good HC, but I know he can run a defense. If he makes good OC hires, well we know he can recruit. Saban has taught him how to build a staff.
