Lean towards Smart because he's younger, but it's almost an even swap.

the biggest upgrade would be recruiting. Chavis didn't do much, I think Smart would do a lot.

Yall are gonna provide some fodder for some Bama fans who really don't have any reason to care that Smart gets paid 2mm/yr.

Don't know.

Chavis was a top 10, possibly top 5 DC in college football.

Is Smart? I will have to see after he steps out from Saban's shadow. RIght now no one has any idea.

I don't know enough about Smart. If Smart does come to LSU and wants to run a full fledged 3-4, there are going to be some big growing pains. Our OLBs are tiny. We'd have to pretty damn good MLBs though.

Trading One Achilles Heel for Another.

The ongoing weakness of John Chavis was the inability of our D to get stops at the end of a half.

In Smart’s case, it seems to be the non-conventional O’s (NCO) of the day even though Bama usually has a decided talent advantage. I don’t think Saban/Smart have demonstrated with any consistency that they know how to scheme against NCO’s. Gary Danielson (I think) maintains a running list of all of Saban’s “keys” to this – it’s quite funny to hear.

IMO, since more and more O’s are using non-conventional schemes hiring Smart would be trading one Achilles heel for another.

We literally cannot run a 3-4 defense. We do not have the type of DL necessary nor the LBs. We have no LBs in this recruiting class. And we lose Welter.

So Muschamp wasn't a good DC then?
