At some point in time people decided that his ultra simplistic style of writing was the one of the best things to happen to literature throughout history. It's kind of mind blowing. With that said, his works are very enjoyable and he was a real man in his time.

I've read (in order of preference)
Sun also rises
For whom the bell tolls
Old man and the sea
To have and have not
Garden of Eden

Added Hemingway quotes bonus:
"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut"

"There is no friend as loyal as a book"

"There are only three sports: mountain climbing, bull fighting, and motor racing. All the rest are merely games"

"I drink to make other people interesting"

"Write drunk, edit sober"

"My only regret in life is that I did not drink more wine"

I love Hemingway mostly because of the sense of adventure I feel when reading his work. The constant partying, traveling, hunting, eating, drinking, etc.

In order of preference:
Sun Also Rises
A Moveable Feast
Islands in the Stream
Garden of Eden
Old Man and the Sea
Dangerous Summer
A Farewell to Arms
Green Hills of Africa
To Have and Have Not
The Torrents of Spring

It was hot. Rain had dampened the streets. I felt somewhere between muggy and stifling. I couldn't get my mind off Hemingway -- the novels, the stories, the whole ball of wax. And what was my two cents? Nothing. I don't give my opinion if I don't have to. Let the world argue. I'll just stand back and watch the battles.

He is one of my favorite writers (or it is probably more accurate to say his body of work contains many of my favorite books and stories).

From what I've read he could be something of an a-hole in real life. But he sure could write.

Like many great writers, the views of his writing went through something of a negative reaction at some points after his death. But I think in the long run he will be considered among the greats. I think his reputation was hurt a bit by the fact that so many people tried to copy his style thinking that any short, active declarative sentences would do it. But not many could match his craftsmanship in the style.

I've read pretty much all of his stuff. My favoites (both novels and short stories) are: The Sun Also Rises, Old Man and the Sea, A Movable Feast (technically that one is an essay or memoir I guess), The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Big Two Hearted River.

I am a Hemingway fan. I'm fascinated by the whole "lost generation" concept and what it would've been like to come of age in that era. A Farewell to Arms is one of the greatest love stories ever written. It is probably my favorite Hemingway work. The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises are also excellent and easy Hemingway reads. Old Man has some of the best passages on humility that one will encounter in modern literature. The Sun Also Rises is bleak, and not at all uplifting, but will make you forget that it is set almost 100 years ago during the interwar period. Blows holes in the theory that somehow people were more moral in times past.

I enjoyed all the Hemingway books I've read. Not sure I have a favorite as they are all good but I do have The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises in a prominent place in my home. I bought both in Key West at Hemingway House a few years ago.
That tour is a must for anyone interested in his works and how he lived.
Tragic, tragic story!
