***edited the post since we have spoilers for the end of Book 7 now***

I started the series about a year ago. I got to Wizard and Glass and lost interest because I was bored to tears with the Susan story-line. After seeing the movie, my interest returned and I was able to finish W&G (which is now my favorite book in the series ) and read Wolves of the Calla and Song of Susannah in the past week. I enjoyed them, but I caught myself wishing we could go back to Cuthbert and Alain.

I'm 25% through Book 7 (Just met the Breakers and they are planning to attack the HQ at Thunderclap, please no spoilers after this) here are my thoughts so far:

1. I don't like Mordred. I'm very disappointed Walter got killed by him. That was Roland's job. But damn, that was a gruesome death. I think the whole series could have done a better job at establishing antagonists.

2. If Oy dies, I'm going to quit reading. The most emotional parts of the book are Oy's close calls and when I thought Oy was in the bag to feed Mordred.

3. Stephen King writing himself into the story in cringe-worthy.

4. Wolves of the Calla was pretty good, but the actual fight against the Wolves was a bit of a letdown after all that buildup. The exact opposite of Eyebolt Canyon, which was perfect. He may have also spent too much time with Callahan's backstory.

5. Song of Susanna is probably my least favorite of the series.

Song of Susannah is a festering pile of dog crap. And yeah, King writing himself into the story, and even moreso doing what he did with the characters based on that was completely absurd and some of the worst writing I've ever seen. Walter going out like a chump was also terrible as you said.

He really should have waiting and gotten some distance from his accident before finishing the series, as The Wind through the keyhole is an excellent story, and the last two books in the series before that are pretty bad. Wolves of the Calla as you say is decent (outside of King writing himself into the story again via the Preacher from Salem's Lot with the endless pages of his struggles with alcoholism, which is pointless and boring as hell).

FWIW, I saw a clip of King earlier this week announcing that he will be probably be doing a new Dark Tower book.

I've got some serious issues with this series, don't want to address them all in this thread due to spoilers though. The way Walter went out was terrible writing, as was King writing himself into the story.

Damn shame too, because Wizard and Glass and Wind through the Keyhole were both great.

I hated this as well. I think it could have been more interesting, and a nice twist if they used it to turn things on it's head and show that we the readers don't inhabit the keystone world. Some twist like King is really Richard Bachman in the keystone world and has published books under the name King. That may not be the best example but I'm not a writer making millions.

So I finished the series and all I can say is I'm disappointed.

I pretty much hated every choice King made in finishing the series. Jake dying to save King was beyond stupid and such a terrible way to kill him off. The ending just seemed rushed and anti-climatic. The Crimson King was a let-down and Mordred seemed liked a useless character. "The Artist" was too convenient and "erasing" the ultimate antagonist of the series was a horrible way to end it. Well, it was horrible until I got to the real ending, which was terrible too.

All in all, half the ride was amazing, but it doesn't make up for the last 3 books.

King made some pretty bad choices in the second half of the series (writing himself in was horrible)(and women gunslingers throwing plates as weapons - dumb). But I thought the very end was perfect. And I was happy as hell that the thing was finally over before he could screw it up even more.

So I'm halfway through Wind through the Keyhole now, just found out from this board that it exists. Easy read, decent enough.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. King wasn't kidding when he said to prepare for the deus ex machina. Then he goes on to insult the reader for expecting a halfway competent ending.

That and the way Walter was killed were both huge letdowns. King spent so many books building up the confrontation between these characters, and Roland never directly faces either one. Huge disappointment.

I agree with this.

I thought the ending was perfectly in line with the rest of the book. Time is a wheel.

Yes. I never understood why people were upset with this. It is only mentioned about a hundred times in the book. I would like a story with the Horn of Eld.

After having some time to think about it, I take back my criticism of the ending. Just the part where Roland gets sent back in time. Still pissed about everything else though.

Also, did we ever find out what happened to Rhea? Last time I remember her being mentioned was at the end of W&G when Roland killed his mom. I don't remember reading about any revenge for that.

Roland hints that he meets up with her again and things don't go well for her at the very end of W&G, but it's never shown or discussed after that.

It would be nice if King wrote the next Dark Tower book about this.

I would like to see the brothers from The Eyes of the Dragon and Jack Sawyer from The Talisman books in the new novel too.

The highlight of the whole series is Roland’s story of how he met Susan in wizard and glass. I was so immersed in that flashback I didn’t want it to end, and such a heart wrenching ending to it. Blaine the mono and the 3rd book are a close second for me
