I'm reading the Bethrothed by Alessandro Manzoni. It's fantastic!

My Italian friends tell me it was mandatory reading in high school in Italy.

For a book set in the 1600's, written in the 1800s it is very readable.

Available in English? My Italian is fairly rudimentary.

It's a great read ... one of the greatest, regardless the language.

I read it in English first, while living in Vicenza in the early 80s. Turned around and immediately read it in Italian, a couple of times, before reading Lui è un uomo senza nome. (The Man With No Name, by Robert Ludlum along with another of his, Il Circolo Materese).

The Man with no name, of course, being The Bourne Identity.

I learned Italian by taking classes over there, through my Italian girlfriend, and while reading those three books. I still have them in my library.

Bethrothed is a fantastic read ecb.
