I love the show, and just started reading the first book yesterday. 100 pages in and it's basically just the script for the series.
To people who have read the books: do you think it's worth reading the books if I've seen all the episodes?

Story will start to change a little by the end of book 1. Then a good bit by the end of book 2. Then the show starts merging, and cutting, and altering plot lines significantly.
Book 3 is still probably the best book I've ever read, and the show didn't come anywhere close to it, IMO.

Absolutely
There are a ton of small and not so small details that were never included in the show that really do a great job of immersing you in that world.

Yes. It's an absolutely wonderful series. Book one and the first season are pretty much a mirror of each other. After that they start to differ.
Once you finish be prepared to pull a 180 on your feelings about lord too fat to sit a horse.

I thought the exact same thing. Its very similar to season 1 of the show, but starts to separate alot later in the book and into the rest of the books

Yeah, I'd still recommend it, but you will become very angry with a fat tubby piece of shite.

The show is no way near as good as the books. Keep reading. Storylines start to divert soon.

I agree. No book I've ever read has caused me to throw it across the room in anger then run to pick it up and read for 12-14 hours straight. Just amazing.

Until I read it, Game of Thrones was the ONLY book that I threw down in agravation at the unpredictability and certain events. Several times. Then it was Storm of Swords. Again, several times the Nook was slammed on the bed so I could reel outside, smoke, and just think about and absorb the events and looming consequences. I loved it!
This was about 2 years before the show. Yes, the books are very engaging and richer and I'm so glad I read them. Even though you know what's going to happen there's a lot of clarification in the books that the show just can't cover.

I'll ask it this way:
Is it worth starting the series knowing the author may never finish it?
I've been debating weather to start it or not but don't want to get invested and never have a finished series.

Personally I'm not gonna finish it anyway. The only reason I can remember to finish it off the top of my head is Tyrion. I can't even remember the differences anymore.....
EXCEPT Bran's story! Just remembered that.

The best way to look at it is that you will be reading a story that functions on compounding interest.
The TV show is never going to be any deeper than it is, because of the limits of screen time and budgets; the books are exceptionally deep and are interwoven with history, suspicion, pieces of puzzles, and half-truths that make the entire tale much richer for the telling.
The show is like good commercial BBQ-- as good as you can expect for what you pay for it.
The books are like home made-- a fuller, richer, and more unique experience that is all the better for not having to have someone else do the work of drawing the story in your mind.

Like everyone says, its not until book 2 that the stories start to diverge. Book 5 is vastly different than the TV series, not only in plot line, but more importantly in character development.
Case in point:
Jamie is my least favorite character in the tv series.
Jamie is by far my favorite character in the books.

Yes, it's worth reading, because the show is a completely different story at this point.

I read all the books after Season 4 and I'm glad I did. I think GRRM had a really decent storyline going through the third book. After that, he really falls off. Books 4 and 5 are not good.

No, there are so many completed series to check out which many think are superior. I don't read these types of series anymore until they are complete, or i am confident the series won't fizzle after a couple books, or in the rare case - simply never be finished.
