I really like the Gentlemen Bastards books, but Lynch has been taking his sweet arse time getting the next novel out. I'm really hoping to see the next novel by the beginning of next year.

quote:

Getting the obligatory question that no one wants to answer out of the way then, how is the book coming along?

There's some more info about the novel in the interview.
Everything with my fourth book, The Thorn of Emberlain, is coming along really well. I’m only being slightly facetious when I’m saying that I should be at home working on it [laughs] rather than here in Sweden and Finland traveling between conventions, but some of these things are unavoidable; as strange as it seems to look at this as a professional commitment, I suppose it really is.

My wife and I will have an uninterrupted 2 month period after we go home, during which I basically hope to get the book turned in, and then we can begin setting a firmer schedule for its publication. For the most part I’m very pleased with it. I’m pretty sure that I can fix the stuff that I’m not pleased about in the next 8 weeks or so.

Good to hear he's making progress. It seems like every series (other than Sanderson) that I have invested time in have run into delays.

Hopefully he, GRRM and bitchboy Rothfuss get over their Trump triggers and finish their god damned books while he's still in office.

Yeah, its a little off-putting. I used to follow Lynch on the twitters, but I got tired of the constant Trump bashing. I'm not even that big of a Trump fan. I'm just fricking sick of having to see it everywhere I go.

The more interesting part of the interview is when he talks about how Thorn is the book he starting writing first and envisioned years ago, but then realized he couldn't do it without going back in time a bit and explaining a whole lot.

So basically 1-3 were set up novels and 4-7 are now the "main story".

Sanderson took 4 years between Way of Kings and the second stormlight book, and it's going to be 3 years between the 2nd and 3rd books. As much as the Wax and Wayne books are my favorite stuff by him, he takes a long time with series as well (more due to have to many balls in the air rather than lack of writing of course, but still).

I gotta say I read the first one of these books per tigerdroppings recommendations and I really hated it. I kept waiting for the main character to flex an ounce of the wit they hyped up so hard and his genius plan mostly consisted of getting his arse saved by Jean. That being said I'm a fan of Asoiaf so good on him for giving a damn about his fans at least.

Brilliants a strong word, and considering the author was only able to set up that situation because of the cartoonish villains that refused to finish Locke off it just wasn't that great to me. There is a lot better fantasy out there than this series.

I think you're nitpicking here.

I've only read the first book but found it incredibly original and entertaining. A mob/gangster story set in a fantasy world...a world that Lynch realy made come alive with his vivid description of the city.

Was it perfect? No but few novels are. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I've forgotten everything but the end of the last book. Loved the veer it took at the end but damn I need to reread all them.

Uh no.

It's probably the 3rd or 4th best unfinished series out there.

Meh, I'm a fan of the series, but there are a bunch of finished series and quite a number of unfinished series better than this one. The first book was fantastic and one of the best fantasy books I've read the past 10-15 years, but the second and third books were pretty average. Hopefully Lynch gets it back on track with book 4.
