Yeah so I played the video game ( ) and became totally intrigued by the actual poem. I borrowed it from a friend and all I can say is "wow." What a chilling, terrifying read. One must wonder if Dante was actually guided through hell.

I'll be working on the purgatorio and paradisio next.

Anyone here read it recently? Thoughts? Everyone should read this incredible piece of literature.

Yeah the commedia is basically the greatest work of literature in history. Purgatorio is also very readable; but Paradiso is like a philosophical tract and requires you to know a lot of obscure medeival theology to really understand. For all 3 I highly recommend you get an edition with footnotes.

purgatorio is about people pushing rocks up hills. paradisio is about a bunch of lights flying around. lights everywhere. i had to read them in college. Inferno is the best, purgatorio is ok, and paradisio is a big peiceof shite.

I'll always remember my college film professor comparing Dante's concentric circles of hell with Bazin's "auteur theory."

As someone who enjoys writing, it makes me want to write a modern version of the inferno (and no, not like the videogame).

Those Westboro baptist fricks would get their own circle

Paradiso is the most beautiful. Purgatory is probably the most interesting. Inferno is the least good in both respects.

A true indication of bad taste is rating Inferno highest. Also, the Comedy is incredibly complex and nearly impossible to understand properly going it alone. A good guide to Dante as a whole is John A. Scott's "Companion." I recommend the Durling / Martinez translation; it's the most accurate and has very good notes that don't stray into the irrelevant and obnoxious like Hollander's. Plus you get the italian on the facing page.

He wasn't.

Actually, there is no Hell, but I hear Los Angeles is getting close.

C'mon guys. I don't think he was actually guided through hell. I just meant the way he wrote it and the detail goes beyond the imigination.

I've heard of it and I am definitely going to buy it. I've been hearing buzz that it might rival The Stand (which I seriously doubt).

Good recomendation

Thanks for the info. I will definitely check those out. The version my friend let me borrow is by Chicardi (I think).

Not saying you are wrong because it's all opinion, but the general consensus I've seen is Inferno at #1.

I guess evil will always be the most intriguing.

consider the audience. The OT chose that tucker guy's book for their book of the month club. These people think Dan Brown is a genius.
