Close between Michael Moorcock and Douglas Adams. Fitzgerald would be third.

I'd probably put C.S. Lewis ahead of him because he spans so much. A little science fiction, a little fantasy, a little thriller and a little Theology and Philosophy. Few writers span that kind of range.
Fair enough. I've only read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Never finished the series. I enjoyed it, but didn't keep going so I'm not a fair judge when it comes between the two. Probably should read some more of his stuff.
I just think, if I put The Silmarillion/ Hobbit/LOTR together and I try and find another series/catalog from one person that I would enjoy reading more than that, even if it was compared to 20 books, I can't.
But I'm with you on Twain. He's either two or three for me. I would probably give the edge to Doyle just because of how easy it is to re-read and enjoy it just as much for the 5th time as I did for the 1st. Although Doyle became a bit of a weirdo later in life and his non Sherlock stuff doesn't do much for me.

Favorite one who's alive is Joe Abercrombie, who wrote the First Law series. It also helps that he releases a new book every year on my birthday.

Mark Twain, largely because I love his sarcasm. However, one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever read was one of his short stories about a dog used for medical experiments. Very dark.
