Recap: Tigers Speed by Northwestern St, 88-74

Just a day after Northwestern State beat Auburn 111-92, LSU took control early and held on to beat a very good Northwestern State team. Andre Stringer scored his 1,000th career point and finished with a game high 21 points. O'Bryant was also able to score 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds.

Mickey and Hickey scored double digit points with 10 and 11 respectively. Jordan Mickey starts his college career with two consecutive double doubles after adding 13 rebounds, 6 blocks and 3 assists. He currently leads the SEC in blocks with 5.5 per game.

Northwestern State was losing at halftime by nine, the same amount they were losing by to Auburn before they were able to score 72 second half points. However, against this Tiger team, they were only able to score 43 in the second half and fell short.

The Stats:

LSU had 27 offensive rebounds and 64 overall. They outrebounded the Demons by 24. Andre Stringer

LSU had only 15 assists and 22 turnovers. LSU had too many traveling calls and Johnny O'Bryant turned it over 6 times.

LSU only committed 14 fouls. A vast improvement from the UMASS game where they had 20 in the first half.

LSU made 16 of 26 free throws. Still not where they want to be. They are shooting 60.8% on the season, which is 293rd in the NCAA.

Quick Observations:

The centers looked vastly improved from the first game. Darcy Malone had 5 points in 5 minutes including a beautiful three pointer and a very nice post-up reverse layup. Odo had 7 points and 8 rebounds in 13 minutes and played very well for the Tigers.

Malik Morgan looks much better this season. He isn't settling for long jump shots and his driving to the basket has gotten him to the free throw line 9 times (7/9 from line) with only 6 FG attempts.

JOB and Mickey need to work on not traveling during post moves. The two players combined for 8 turnovers, most while in the post.

Anthony Hickey may not start, however, he is LSU's point guard. Quarterman still has some developing, but shows some promise with his athletic ability and vision.

For the second straight game, Coach Jones played walk-on Eddlestone in the first half.

Player Grades:

Johnny O'Bryant (B+) O'Bryant had 21 points and 14 rebounds, however, his 6 turnovers really hurt the Tigers. He had 4 fouls for the second time in two games. Have to love his two "Shaq" dunks.

Shavon Coleman (C) Coleman didn't have a particularly impressive game. He had 4 points on 2 of 10 shooting. He added 4 rebounds and 3 assists along with 3 turnovers.

Jordan Mickey (A-) Mickey really impressed with his second consecutive double double to begin his career. He had 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 blocks. He added 3 assists on 2 turnovers in 30 minutes of action. Love his ability to pass from the post.

Tim Quarterman (C-) Tim had a poor performance, but he showed promise defensively. He scored 1 point, had 1 rebound, and a steal in 11 minutes.

Andre Stringer (B+) Stringer scored 21 points for the second time this year, but it took him 20 shots to do it. He was very active pulling down 7 rebounds and had 2 steals and an assist. He made 4 three pointers on 11 attempts.

John Odo (B+) Odo had a very efficient outing dropping 7 points and grabbing 8 boards on NSU. He was 3 of 6 from the field and added a steal.

Shane Hammink (B) Hammink didn't score, but he was able to get 4 rebounds and add an assist in 8 minutes. He was aggressive defensively and played relatively good basketball without taking a shot.

Darcy Malone (B+) Malone made both shot attempts, including a three point shot scoring 5 points in 5 minutes of action. He did have a turnover in the post but showed patience in the post and some nice moves making a reverse layup.

Anthony Hickey (A) Hickey played lights out. He had 11 points, 6 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, and only 1 turnover. Although he came off the bench, he played 29 minutes and made 3 of 7 from three point range.

Malik Morgan (A-) Morgan looked much better on offense than a year ago. He drove to the basket hard and picked up 7 free throw attempts making 6. He had 8 points and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes of action. His defense also looked improved.
