Heading out to San Fran/Santa Cruz to visit a friend in late August. Looking to spend a day or two (maybe camp out 1 night) in Yosemite. Any must do or must see things? Looking for hikes and sights?

I think getting reservations there is really freaking onerous. I'd be shocked if you could find a spot for this August, but maybe I'm wrong.
I know you have to get into this goofy lottery like a year in advance to hike up Half Dome, and they only let like 225 people a day do it.
Californians are kooky about this stuff.
ETA, did you mean Yosemite or Yellowstone?
