I am making my first of what will be two or three trips to WS this weekend. Most trips will be short with 2-3 nights. Anything fun to do around the city or in driving distance? It will be me and the wife + 13/15 y/o kids. My fear is the 15 y/o will be bored. Thanks in advance.

I live in Winston-Salem. Hopefully you're staying downtown. 4th St and Trade St are the happening streets with breweries and restaurants. Foothills Brewery is the local brewery and one of the best in North Carolina. The original RJ Reynolds building has been recently renovated into a Kimpton Hotel "The Cardinal". It's a really cool Art Deco building that was designed by the same architect as a scale model of the Empire State building. It predates The Empire State Building and it sends the RJR Building a Father's Day card every year. The restaurant and bar are really good and you can dress fairly casual. Old Salem dates back to the 1700s and is similar to Williamsburg or Old Philadelphia. It's a very pleasant part of town. There are a couple of cool new parks "Artivity On the Green" on Trade St and "Bailey Park" in the old RJR district. Both are modern and innovative. Google them. Mast General Store on Trade is a destination. They have other locations in Asheville, G'ville SC and Blue Ridge Mountains. There's usually alot going on in the summer downtown. Let me know if you're looking for something specific and I'll try to help. Keeping a teenager intrigued may be the difficult part. "Camel City BBQ Factory" has a pretty cool game room upstairs with all kinds of arcade games (new and retro).

Thanks! We are dropping one off at UNCSA for dance camp for 4 weeks. She will be there until late July. We just made a reservation for Ryan's on Saturday night. Hope it will be good.

The wife and I love food so are looking forward to what looks like some cool places.

Are there any outdoor activities- river stuff nearby for the 15 year old by chance?

Thanks a ton!

This event says it's sold out but this would be the river for recreational stuff. You may want to do some more research and see if there are other options. LINK
Otherwise Salem Lake has canoes and kayaks that you can rent. It also has a 7 mile gravel trail you can bike (no bike rentals though). LINK

A few restaurant links:
The Katharine LINK
Sweet Potatoes LINK
The Tavern in Old Salem (Old Salem is half a mile from UNCSA so you should definitely check it out) LINK

You HAVE to go to Milners. Best restaurant in town imo.

If you like beer I second Foothills. Quality brews and good vibe. Family friendly.

I watched the end of Prayer at Jordan Hare there and the whole place stared at me when I yelled (the game on the big screen was dook/Miami, irrc).

Yeah, don't come here for sports. I have to always tell the bartenders stuff like "Hey, can you put it on the Super Bowl please?" I'm exaggerating but it wouldn't be uncommon to walk in a bar and World Series of Poker is on the TVs during college football season.

Fantastic! I will go check it out. Just went to the Tavern in Old Salem. Super cool vibe. The tomato and blue cheese bisque was AMAZING. My wife had the vegetable soup and it was solid but not remarkable. Next we had the Reuben (again super strong), the French dip, and two burgers. All were good. Check was $61 plus tip for 4 people (all waters). Good meal at a very fair price.
