Not trying to complicate things, but you might want to consider driving to the coast instead of the Gorge. If you drive from Portland to Cannon Beach and then south from there, you'll see some spectacular scenery. Drive down to Florence, and then you'll only be an hour from Eugene.

I'm not questioning why you're going to Eugene, but that is probably my least favorite city in Oregon.

ETA: Did you get the room through Hotwire? Which area of town? I'm gonna guess the Hotel Rose @ $110/night.

The whole reason I’m going up there is to go see a show at the Gorge. I’m a music fan and have seen shows all over the country, but have never had a chance to see someone I like at the gorge. This is that chance. Then they’ll be playing in Eugene the next night so that just sets up perfect for Crater Lake and Portland.

Yea Hotel Rose

I probably overestimated the cost. Everyone's going to be at the beach that weekend, so hotel's are probably cheaper than normal.

If you like music, you'll love hanging out in Portland. Just google it, and you'll see who's playing where and when. I don't know what kind of music you're looking for, but Mississippi Studios on Mississippi Ave and Doug Fir Lounge are a couple of places to check out. McMenamin's Crystal Ballroom has some pretty good acts and it's close to your hotel. There's a ton of stuff I don't know about, too.

I've heard of this place and have been meaning to check it out. I'll also check out Doug Fir... Me and the SO love old bars and live music so I think I'll be in the minority that like Portland. Craft beers, dingy bars, weirdos, transients, live music, and laid back is what I live for.

also, in regard to Oregon, i believe there are some areas that are either closed or not as scenic due to their fires last year.

--Columbia river gorge. Basically everything besides the Multnomah Falls is closed, for now.

Actually, Hwy 84 is open all the way from Portland to Hood River. Only the Scenic Hwy is still closed for part of the way (and many hiking trails off the Gorge).

I'm heading out that way for 10 days next week.

--Portland, Gorge, Hood River, Mt. Hood, Bend, Crater Lake, then Willamette Valley Wine Country. Should be epic.

It's actually open all the way to Utah, just did it

I was referring to the area itself. It's closed. There's no hiking available besides 1 or 2 short ones.

I thought about that after I typed it! I guess I was thinking Hood River as that's where MY highway ends on that trip.

Sweet. You going south to Bend from there?

If you need any recs I have some. I'll be in Bend soon enough. I've got the itch badly.

Yep...going to Bend after Hood River. Will be staying there for three nights before hitting Crater Lake. I've seen all the literature and websites but would appreciate any tips.

Can't wait to sit along the Deschutes River with a local beer and wonder why I'd ever come back to New Orleans...

Bro, get yourself an intex tube and pump to bring with. You can float the river. There's some man made rapids that are fun.

There's a shuttle that picks you up at the pull out spot and drops you back off at Riverside park. Costs 3 bucks. If you rent a tube it's expensive.

With your own tube you can float 3 or 4 times for the all day $3 shuttle fee.

Mine has a built in cooler. I put beers/sammich on ice. Speaker/phone in a dry bag (rapids gets everything wet) and every trip I refresh it with more ice and beers.

It's a hell of a relaxing day. Weekends can be really busy. If the shuttle line is long I get a Lyft for $5.

You'll see a lot of hot blondes.

Hit up as many breweries as you can. Crux has the best outdoor area. Patio, misters, 3 food trucks including awesome tacos (my go to). Big grassy area to play cornhole.

Best beer selection in town, besides at the breweries, is at whole foods or Newport Ave market which is where I go. It's near downtown.

For a nice sit down breakfast I go to McKay Cottage, has outdoor seating on grass under some trees. It's a very busy place, for a good reason.

For simple coffee and pastries I go to Sparrow Bakery. Great banana bread and cinnamon rolls etc.

For a quick, cheaper meal Longboard Louie's has great burritos.

Pizza Mondo has a great lunch special, 1 slice, side salad, and a coke for $5.

There are a lot of other great restaurants in Bend. Eta....for a nice dinner meal I go to Zydeco.

Eta....you staying near downtown? Lots within walking distance.

Lots of great restaurants but I always end up eating pizza at Double Mountain and then go to pFriem for more beer.

Absofrickinglutely this. Very relaxing day floating the river. Especially rewarding when paired with good beer.

Also, Crux Fermentation Project at sunset is great. Big grassy area with cornhole, Adirondack chairs, a band, some food carts, and Crux beer. Helluva way to unwind a day...

ETA: Mentioned at sunset, because you can watch the sun set behind the Cascade mountains because you are just east of them.

This, too. Double Mountain has great pizza and it's relatively inexpensive. pFriem is one of the best breweries in the state, and the view from their patio is great. Full Sail has a great view of the Gorge, as well. Beer is so-so there, though.

Hood River is one of the underrated gems of the PNW. Great little town to walk around in. You can go windsurfing, if you want. Not only does it have great breweries, but their are a lot of wineries in the area and many of them have tasting rooms that you'll see as you walk around the town.

Good add. Yep, there's a great view from Crux. The alpenglow surrounding Bachelor, Broken Top, and the Three Sisters is awesome.

2 - Head out to Olympic early and do the Hurricane Hill Trail hike. Go to Lake Crescent for lunch, and hit the Marymere Falls. Head to the coast and camp around Rialto Beach or South beach.

Just a heads up. I underestimated the size of Olympic NP. The drive from the top of Hurricane Ridge to the beach at La Push is about a two hour drive.

Yep, I'm hearing great things about Crux. That's a must, and we're staying just a few blocks away from there.

If I were to rent a bike (that's a BICYCLE... ) for a day in Bend, what's the best trip to take?
