What cities would you recommend for a first time visit? What time of year is the best to travel?

That's only what I can personally vouch for. Definitely look into Juneau too. I still need to see Juneau, Glacier Bay, ANWR, Kobuk Valley, Gates of the Arctic, Barrow, and much more.
Katmai is world class for watching grizzlies feed. I left Katmai and Lake Clark off of my list on accident. I took a plane from Soldotna. Nothing like going fishing, only to end up watching a bear try to eat a young cub.

Random but I was in Anchorage all last week for work but has the city always had so many homeless? I don't remember it being that way 10 years ago when I went.

It's gotten to be more of an issue. They are out in full force during the summer. I've been told a LOT of them migrate here during the summer then go back to the lower 48 during the winter. They hitchhike and what not.
Lots of natives are apart of the homeless. They get vanished from their villages and flown to anchorage. Lots of drunks.

Native villages are buying their addicts and inebriates one way tickets to the larger cities.
