I'm headed to Paris next week and have booked the Overlord tour of Normandy.

Looking online to get tickets for train, I do not see the early morning ( 6am ish) departure and am worried the train books up. Does it?

Is there more than one train? For example, I see a site that has SNCF but I also see Euro Rail.

Can I just walk up and take the train or do I need tickets in advance?

Eh, it's a 3 hour trip from Gare du Nord. Are you sure you want to do try doing Normandy as a day trip? The link is the schedule from Gare du Nord, but there is a 6:12 AM out of Paris St. Lazare.

Paris is one of the places where you should probably never wake up this early unless it's for work.

Bayeux is actually a great place to stay up there. Nice old town that wasn’t destroyed in the invasion. Close to most of what you want to see.

Be careful about the time.
I took that all day Overlord tour of the D-Day Beaches buy we were staying in Bayeux. It leaves the town center at 8:20 and they want you to be there by 8:00. If it is a 3 hour train trip from Paris, the 6:00 train will not get you there on time.
It was an exceptionally good tour though.

Have you been following the strikes? Lots of disruptions to train and rail services. I’d make every effort to get there the day before.

I feel like there is a strike of transpo workers every other summer in Europe. The French and the Belgians are probably the two biggest progenitors of transpo strikes, even including LHR strikes in Nov 22 (not Europe any more).

Make sure to check the right station, there are at least 3 or 4 train stations in Paris. You may do a reverse search and see what station Bayuex has trains to.

ETA: Also, DON'T ever expect the train to possibly get there early if it has other stops. If there's a lot of stops it can get frustrating as it may leave or be ahead of schedule, but they don't leave each stop until the stated time of that stop so sometimes you will be sitting at a random stop for a bit.

Could you possibly rent a car? Stay overnight in Bayeux?

We did at the airport and drove to Bayeaux. Stayed there for almost a week. Maybe a 2:45 HR drive. Very easy for us. Seems like with a train you'd run the risk of missing the tour and it'd be a LONG day.

I'm surprised someone bigger like Overland allows people to train in that morning. Its really not a day trip, or shouldn't be and is much better not as a day trip. There's plenty to do and the french countryside in that area is spectacular. I know everyone has a limited time and we all like to cram things in. I've been there too.

I would book the train in advance just in case.

LINK

Bayeux from St. Lazare.

Will need to change the date to whichever day your trip is, and you might need to click something that says previous journeys, it defaults to the 10AM train.

I agree with the people who advise you to spend the night in Bayeux and even spend a few days there if you can. It is a wonderful little town.

In 2019 we spent a few days in Paris, rented a car, drove to Bayeux on a Thursday, took the all day Overlord tour on Friday, drove to Mount St. Michel on Saturday, stayed in Bayeux on Sunday (which was Easter) and drove back to Paris on Monday where we stayed for a few more days. That was a fantastic trip.

Normandy is doable as a day trip from Paris but just barely. It would really be an ordeal to get there that morning by train and private drivers from Paris are very expensive and take you on an abbreviated tour because of time constraints.

But this is definitely a tour worth taking.

Don't really see a "day trip" as very doable, even by car, unless that's all you have.

Touring Normandy after our Seine River cruise for a week was magical. One of the best trips we ever took.

As noted, we based in Bayeux. Stayed in the Le Grand Hôtel du Luxembourg. Nice accommodations. Reasonably priced. Centrally located. Great town with lots of restaurants, shopping, wine stores etc. Very nice cathedral.

Day trips to Pointe du Hoc, the museums at Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Caen. The bunkers at Longues-sur-Mer were truly amazing to see.

Drove 2 1/2 hours to Mont Saint Michel, a true bucket list location. On the way back, went to the gorgeous seaside town of Honfleur.

A week minimum is truly needed to see this amazing part of France in my book.
