I am heading to Columbia tomorrow for a conference and will be staying through Friday. I will have some downtime and I am looking for things to fill an afternoon or two. Any suggestions?

Drive to Charleston. See/do cool things there.

When you leave on Friday, drive to Holly Hill and have lunch at Sweatman's BBQ. They are supposed to be the best BBQ in SC, and are only open 11:30 - 8:00 Fridays and Saturdays.

Riverbanks Zoo is a top zoo in the country. The Columbia Fireflies, a Single A team, has a brand new stadium which lends itself to a good time for a weekday evening, granted that they're in town. The beer scene is evolving, and Columbia has a few breweries, Conquest and River Rat were the ones when I last made it home. Palmetto Pig and Little Pigs are two great BBQ buffets, with PPig being close to S. Carolina's campus.

Thanks for the response. I am staying at The Inn at USC so I'll be right by campus. Being that I am 22 I may venture to a few college bars to see how they compare to Fred's

The campus is nice as well as the state capital grounds. The Five Points area is kind of the place to go for eats and drinks. I have a favorable impression of the place because many years ago a young and friendly cocktail waitress asked me what kind of cologne I was wearing and when I asked her why she said because I smelled really good. Not that the story has anything to do with anything but I thought I'd throw it in there. Let me know if you find her--not sure what she would look like now.

Here's a link to Five Points and there's a Thursday evening free concert which looks like fun.
