Wife wants to go there, as her grandmother was from Sandefjord.

I hear it's a great place to drive and move at your own pace. So.... Where to go? What to see?

Oslo is a beautiful city. Clean. Easy to navigate. The fjords in western oslo and particularly bergen are worthwhile stops. We traversed by sea so i am not sure how easy to get west to east by land. We were there in early june and weather was great.

I only know what I've seen on "Lilyhammer" on Netflix. The people seem nice, except for the criminals.

Norway is a beautiful (and expensive) country. I go there about 3-4 times per year for work, but almost always stay longer since I love it so much.

Sandefjord is less than 2 hours south of Oslo. You should fly into Oslo, drive to Sandefjord and see that city just for the sake of paying homage to the family roots.
Then drive back to Oslo, and do Rick Steve's "Norway in a Nutshell" tour (you can do it yourself. It doesn't have to be a guided tour). It is possible to do it all in one very long day, but I would recommend staying overnight in Flam for a more leisurely trip.
1) Train from Oslo to Myrdal (5 hours so take the earliest train possible).
2) Train from Myrdal down to fjordside Flåm (1 hour).
3) Boat through the fjords (from Flåm to Gudvangen, 2 hours).
4) Bus from Gudvangen to Voss (40 kilometers, 1 hour).
5) Train from Voss to Bergen (1 hour).

You can then check out the area around Bergen before heading home.

Otherwise - fly into Bergen and just tour the area around there (fjord cruises, hiking, kayaking, camping...).

Also ab Norway. We flew through Oslo to Paris for the euro cup last summer. On the way back stayed 4 nights at the thief hotel. Extremely posh area of the city everyone was way more attractive than me and my friend. Every dude is at least 6'1" and every chick is thin and blonde. I felt like apologizing.

In all seriousness they were super nice to us and the sushi was amazing. Summer there is absolutely to die for.
