I may have a small window of opportunity to take a trip up to the PNW, which is something i've wanted to do for a very long time. I'm mostly interested in checking out the coastal areas, beaches, and Olympic National Park & Forest.

Is 3-4 days enough time to check out these sites/scenery or would it be better to plan for more extended trip at a future time?

3-4 days would be enough to check those out, but you won't have time to stay as long as you would like to.

I would stay in the Olympic National Forest, if I was me, and then make a quick drive over to the beach for a day. The beaches are beautiful, but the water is cold, and the wind coming off the water can make it quite chilly. It will actually be more comfortable in the mountains, and the scenery in the mountains is just stunning.

If looking for a base of operations, Port Angeles is probably a good place to start. Lake Crescent Lodge and the Red Lion are both good. Lake Crescent is a little out-dated, but a great location. Of course, camping is also an option, if you have the equipment.

If you want to take an excursion that does not entail a hike in the mountains, there is a ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, BC, and Port Townsend is a 45 minute drive from Port Angeles. Both are beautiful, and have good restaurants as well as scenic water and mountain views.

ETA: I used to live in Port Townsend, so I'm a little biased. That was many years ago, so my information may be out of date and there may be better options on where to stay, now. If someone wants to correct what I just said, or add to it, please feel free.

Also, make sure to go to Hurricane Ridge on a clear day. Breathtaking.

Just went to Olympic NP. If you want to go to the beaches or Hoh Rainforest, you should stay at least one night in the Forks area. The drive is too far from Port Angeles. Hurricane Ridge is close to Port Angeles. As an alternative to Olympic, consider the San Juan islands via the ferry out of Anacortes.

We had a good time. Flew into Seattle around noon and drove to Anacortes to catch ferry to Friday Harbor. On San Juan Island,we rented a condo at Roche Harbor. Stayed there 2 nights and took ferry from Friday Harbor to Sydney, BC. Once off ferry, drove to Victoria. After two days, took ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles. From there, went to Hurricane Ridge then drove to Forks. From Forks, we went to beaches, Hoh Rainforest and Kalaloch Lodge. After two days, drove back to Seattle for last two nights. If you take ferries, I'd reserve a spot. Cars were turned away in Victoria. San Juan was the highlight. Olympic NP gets so much hype, it was a bit of a letdown. Not much to Forks. Our cabin was ok, but the area lacks for any nightlife or dining. We had a campfire going with some people we met staying in a tent next to our cabin and the property manager made us shut down at 10pm. I'll post a few pics once I upload them. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

I live here. It sucks. Makes sense to take a vacation here, but pretty much all the things to do are outside of Seattle.

I live in Portland, and it seems to be more liveable than Seattle. Having said that, Both cities have a ton of stuff to do within 1-2 hours of the city. Skiing, boating, hiking, whitewater rafting, camping, beachcombing, etc... There are also plenty of great restaurants and bars in both cities.

Seattle would be a tougher place to live, I think. Especially if you work downtown.

I love both PDX and SEA, but I was more impressed with Portland and its transit when I was there in '14.

Seattle is a fun city and beautiful too but I could handle Portland better.
