Renting a car for the first time, what do I need to know?

Driving from Baton Rouge to Austin, Texas in July and really wanted to try out a new Jeep Wrangler because I've been leaning on getting one. Anyway, what are some things I should know about renting a car and any places you guys recommend to do so?

I do all my rentals through national because my company (not MY company) has an agreement with them for rates. Never any issues with them.
As far as what to know:
Make sure you get unlimited miles (which is pretty common anymore)
And don't crash.
Make sure you fill up before you return it or they will charge you like $5 / gallon to do so. Don't prepay either. That is still like $3.50 / gallon.

You will be beaten to death by the time you get there. Wrangler's aren't ideal for long drives, especially on the interstate. But have fun

Baton Rouge to Austin is not far FYI

I agree about National because my company uses them also. But go online and sign up for an account with them or whatever rental company you plan on using. That alone will save you money.

Okay cool, thanks. Yeah, also it's 511 miles and the Wrangler gets 21 mpg on the interstate w/ a 22 gallon tank so I shouldn't be too bad gas wise should I?

The selection in Baton Rouge will be limited, I'd be surprised if you can dingd a wrangler. Consider the extra insurance. Even though you have insurance if you have a high deductible, it might be worth it to not have to pay it in a wreck.

Check to see if your regular car insurance covers you for rentals. That way you can decline the rental place insurance, if you're covered by yours of course.

Better yet check to see if your credit card covers rental cars

Do some googling and research some travel forums like flyertalk.Com for discount codes.
There are many many corporate and leisure discount rates available for enterprise & National that you can take advantage of.
I found one leisure rate through the Ohio St alum association that is like $35/day with unlimited mileage and you don't have to drop off at the same place you picked up (which usually comes with mileage or transfer fees)
