One night in NYC

Gonna be in NY tomorrow night for business. We are eating at Beauty and Essex 8-10 but I'd like to go to a bar afterward. Any suggestions?

My suggestions would be:
Raines Law Room (W 17th st and 6 Ave) - It's a prohibition style speakeasy. Very cool and in the style of NYC cocktail bars. You sometimes need a reservation, so call now just in case. It won't be packed, because they only allow a small number of people in. If you like nice, quiet cocktail bars with interesting drinks it's a great place to go. Drink are like $15 each FYI.
Mcsorleys Old Ale House (E 7th st and 3rd ave) - This is a well known bar, but very fun. It's supposed to be one of the oldest bars in NYC, and it still looks like an old time bar on the inside. A lot of history here and it's a cool stop. They serve Mcsorleys dark and light ale. No wine or liquor, and it's cash only. It's the type of place where people get drunk and sing bar songs. Good times all around.
The Dead Rabbit (Water st and Broad st - Financial district) - this is another cocktail bar that has a cool atmosphere. ETA: wanted to clarify based on later posts: The typical Dead Rabbit experience is walking up and putting your name in for a table upstairs, heading to the downstairs bar for a drink while you wait, and then heading upstairs for a cocktail and/or food.
These are just a few suggestions of places that I enjoy in the city. It's NYC, there's no way to give you a comprehensive list of places to go. If none of these places sounds like your kind of place, I'd recommend just heading to the East Village (St. Mark's place is the main street there) and walking around. You will find a bar to your liking. Enjoy.

I second this recommendation. But definitely call now for a reservation.

I prefer Old Rabbits to Dead Rabbits in the rabbit-named-bar comparisons. Also, The Third Man is only a couple blocks away from Beauty and Essex and it is pretty good.

Old Rabbit is pretty cool also, good beer selection

Was reading about the dead rabbit today at lunch. Definitely going to stop by there after dinner tonight.
Client dinner in the financial district. I booked Delmonico's. Other options? Need something fairly nice to nice (i.e. Not a pub or noodle shop).

I would venture out of that area but Felice 15 Gold Street is pretty good. Delmonico's is fine for a client dinner if that is what you are looking for.

Bobby Van's is another popular steak house in the financial district. But I think you're fine with Delmonico's if you're in this area. Btw, just walked by Dead Rabbit on my way home from work. It's the right choice if you're going to stay in this area. Enjoy.

Very international crowd at the Dead Rabbit tonight. Someone (a Brit?) mistakenly took my beer of the bar and said "of course I'd take the beer of the biggest f'ing New Yorker in the bar!"
I replied "even worse, I ain't from NY I'm from Ala f'ing bama!" Good times.
Delmonico's was good. Got the Delmonico's steak and the potatoes. It was good. Solid, not great. Sat us near the kitchen but otherwise exactly what I was looking for.

Did you go upstairs at the Dead Rabbit or did you stay at the downstairs bar?

Thanks everyone. I'll let ya know what I choose tonight.

Downstairs. I'm in a walking boot so didn't feel like hobbling up. Downstairs was packed.

Cool. I should have specified, the cocktail bar part is upstairs, it's a very different vibe between upstairs and downstairs. Although the downstairs area is fun as well.

Well that makes a lot of sense. I was wondering why this bar had won all of these awards. Oh well, next time.

Yea the upstairs is what it is known for. The typical Dead Rabbit experience is walking up and putting your name in for a table upstairs, heading to the downstairs bar for a drink while you wait, and then heading upstairs for a cocktail and/or food.
Sorry, wish I had specified before, but the downstairs part is still fun, it's just your typical bar downstairs though. Glad you had a fun trip all around.
