Have you ever done this? Just pick a direction and go. Discover whatever the day brings. With money in your pocket of course. Do not want to ride the rails like a hobo.
My only concern would be finding hotel rooms.

When I was young and stoned and skipping school, yes. As an adult? No.

My retired parents do this, but by car. And it's not like they stumble into any awesome shite, they just bounce from beach town to coastal city to mountain town for a week and then come home.

So tell me just what is your idea of "awesome shite"? Sitting on the beach for a week? Standing in long lines for a roller coaster?
To me great vacations are just as much about who you are with as where you go.

I've sort of done it, went on a road trip for a week or so, but I had plans to stop at the Nantahala outdoor center in North Carolina. Other than those 2 nights there everything else was sort of on a whim
In general though, if you have any time or money constraints at all you should have some idea of what you're doing. Otherwise you could just end up driving to Kansas or west Texas and back

Did several trips in my early 20s where I picked a part of the country and just figured it out day-to-day. I don't have the luxury of that much free time anymore, unfortunately.
