I'll give you some suggestions in Portland. Aside from enjoying Portland's many breweries and restaurants, you can also check out the wine country within 2 hours of Portland.
If you like to do physically active stuff, there is:
1. Summer skiing on Mt. Hood
2. Wind surfing in Hood River on the Columbia River Gorge with Mt. Hood in the background.
3. Pedalpalooza - world's biggest nude bike ride
4. Hiking or whitewater rafting in the some of the many state parks located within an hours drive of Portland.
If sightseeing is more your thing, drive to Hood River and Mt. Hood. The drive along the Columbia River Gorge is fantastic.
Drive to the Oregon coast and drive down the coast on the way to the Redwood Forest. Jedidiah Smith State Park may be a better place for redwood trees than the Redwood National Park, though. The drive down the coast is gorgeous.
On the way back, you can hit up Bend and/or Crater Lake for a day or two...

Go visit Endor aka the Hoh Rainforest. It's pretty spectacular.

I am active for someone in their 60's but will be doing sightseeing trip. Still thinking about starting in Portland but may extend to about 12 days doing Washington and Canada in the first six and Oregon and N Cali in the last six. Suggestions appreciated for these different areas.

In Oregon, go to the Enterprise/Joseph Oregon area. Very underrated and some of my friends who live in Portland are even unfamiliar with it. The Wallowa Mountains are much different from the Oregon Cascades.

Yup, and the drive through the Columbia River Gorge on I-84 is absolutely spectacular. You start out in mountain forests and then the mountains become more rocky as the terrain drys up to the east of the Cascades. Then you hit the high plains and it looks like you're driving through a Clint Eastwood western scene. Finally, you hit the Wallowa's, and it gets green, again.
It's a long drive, though - 5-6 hours. I recommend the Oregon Trail Museum in Baker City (after a beer and lunch at Barley Brown's Brewpub).

Thanks I would like to try this drive. I do not want to drive more than 6-8 hours before I find a place to rest. Will have to look to see where to start and where to stay overnight since I am not familiar with the area.

I am narrowing my options. Have decided to fly into Seattle around July 13 and return to New Orleans July 20. Reserved hotels in Everett, Victoria, and Bremerton and looking for recommendations for day trips from these areas. Have not made flight or car rental reservations yet. Have decided to take ferry to San Juan islands one day and Victoria another. Will catch the Astros on Sunday and sightseeing around Seattle. Thanks for any suggestions for things to see.

Which ferry are you taking to Victoria?
Posted on 4/26/16 at 6:58 pm to Jax-Tiger
Have not booked ferry yet. Will be leaving from Port Angeles on Friday morning. Booked all hotels but still need to book flight and rental car. Planning on taking car on ferry and doing a little sightseeing in Victoria, especially Buchart Gardens. Will reserve ferry before trip. Any thing I need to keep in mind for driving in Canada?

Will be in Seattle on 7/13. Going to Victoria on 7/15. Looking for advice for B&B in Victoria. Need advice on day trips. I need to book a ferry to travel to Victoria and any advice is welcome. Definitely going to Buchart Gardens and not sure what else to do in Victoria. Will be taking rental car on ferry. My wife wants to see a whale and looking for advice on tour that has best chance to see whales. Any other suggestions welcome. TIA

If you start in Portland and work your way up, that should be fine, Seattle is not a bad drive from Portland. From there you could head up to Vancouver.

I think you will be pretty much guaranteed to see whales. I think you can find a whale watching trip from Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Seattle, or Victoria. I would book it from whichever place fits your schedule best.
I don't know any B&B's, but the Empress Hotel in Victoria is gorgeous, and do the afternoon High Tea, if your wife enjoys that sort of thing. The Empress is right smack, dab in the middle of the harbor front, and you should definitely walk through it, if nothing else.

Just did Portland-Mt Ranier-Seattle-Victoria-Vancouver in 12 days. Great trip.
Victoria was awesome. We stayed at the Delta house (a Marriott property). Spectacular view of the city. Tea at the Empress. Lots of pubs (I liked the Bard and Banker). Water taxi made getting around easy but not needed as it is very walkable. Horse drawn carriage was okay. Second oldest china town in NA (like one block total but kind of cool). The Butchart gardens were fine maybe even impressive but I'd probably exchange our half day there for another half day in the city just hanging out. Victoria was the one stop where definitely wanted another day.

I tell people to go to Victoria, rather than Vancouver. Vancouver is just a big city, to me. Victoria has charm, character, and is much less crowded. The capitol buildings are also impressive.
ETA: Not dissing Vancouver as much as I am pimping for Victoria...

Agreed re Vancouver though we were dead tired, it rained most of the time, and I had some work meetings. I enjoyed the city overall and had a couple of good meals. Wouldn't mind going back and spending some time there and up at Whistler.

Thinking about doing Chihuly glass exhibit and space needle one day in Seattle. Is the city pass worth the extra. I am not sure about harbor tour or seeing aquarium.
