Anybody in to Snorkeling or eco tours?
Last year snorkeled Key West and Sombrero at Marathon.
I will hit those again but also looking for any other killer spots. Looe Key maybe.
Also might do Dry Tortuga, but I don't see my wife signing up for an all day is it worth it?

John Pennekamp & Bahia Honda state parks for the win. Big Pine Key & Key Largo. Both great places to hang for the day, and easy snorkeling for kids if you have any. We just went last year with the kids.
Edit: Dry Tortuga is nice, but I don't like the feeling of "stuck" when I can't leave whenever I want.

Have done Key Largo with Captain Slate's many times. Takes you to the statue on Pennekamp.

Will definitely try looe Key
Might try to explorer Bahia Honda on my own- on a reef message board guy told me where I could find some polyp coral

Can you see statue snorkeling? I need to pick up scuba at some point.

There is a huge Goliath Grouper who hangs there, bring hot dogs in case you see him
You going to be there during lobster season?

I would be so pumped to see a Goliath Grouper. May - based on traps being stacked I think not Lobster Season. I struggled diving so didn't see lobster last time
Saw I guess a reef shark last time. Would love to see a nurse shark.

Dry Tortugas is cool, if you're limited in time there's also a seaplane option which is (obviously) faster than the ferry. It does burn up an entire day.
I had a wonderful time there but the historical value of Fort Jefferson (for me) made it better than just the snorkeling.

Yes, you can see the statue while snorkeling. I think the base of the statue is only about 25 feet down, and the statue is close to 9 feet tall - so the tips of the fingers are only about 15 feet down.
I second going with Capt. Slate. I took a scuba class as a PE elective at Auburn, and our end of semester trip was to the Keys and we went out on an afternoon/night trip with Slate to the statue.
We also used Strike Zone Charters out of big Pine to go out to Looe Key. They were good, but Slate was the better dive master and the highlight of the trip.

I am looking to drop a few pounds and then start learning scuba.
Thanks for the advice- I definitely going to hit looe key if there is an off chance I see a grouper.
Would love to see a lion fish, but I think they are deeper? I thought they would be destroying reef fish.

I don't know if I want to burn a whole day by myself - Think the wife would stay on the beach at the hotel. It sounds awesome, but she is luke warm to cold on the idea so noway I would go with her. When turn for the worst and I am getting the evil eye lol

as long as my underwater camera works
last time it was hit and miss - saying something was wrong as soon as I got in the water. So frustrating

the main one that hangs at looe key, likes the shade and hangs out under boats, so dont be afraid to snorkel near the mooring buoys as opposed to the reef to spot him. just make sure you have a flag near by.
One time we pulled up, had lunch and chilled for a bit. When I finally jumped in, he was hanging under my boat and scared the shite out of me.

Are we talking?
Or was it big but not giant?

I am toying with buying fins- but have a size 15 and can't find stuff online. I could check diver direct when I am there, but online they don't seem to have the big sizes.
I bought a nice scuba mask and snorkel last time.
