I simply bought a second SIM card

If your phone is still under contract (being paid off), at least T-Mobile will not let you add a new SIM or e-SIM. It's awesome figuring that out hours after you've landed and have to go back into the airport to get Wifi to get an Uber.

There are a number of travel routers out there, but if you have any status at all with a major hotel brand, and don't do things like FaceTime for 45 minutes every day, you can probably fit within the basic data limits. Don't permit pictures to upload to iCloud on cellular, don't stream Spotify on cellular, etc.

Haha funny you say that because ironically enough, then (in Thailand & Vietnam) I had a T-Mobile (Netherlands) contract with a device on contract and was able to add the physical cards into the dual SIM tray.

Later I had a second T-Mobile NL SIM from my employer that I kept in the second tray slot and that also worked and at one point on a subsequent trip to the US I replaced that second tray slot with a physical T-Mobile US card (prepaid, 1 month unlimited data) and those both worked too.

In the Netherlands T-Mobile got taken over and changed its operating name to “Odido” last summer - I digress most things are still the same, but I’ll find out in two days if the Airalo e-SIM I bought actually works or not (I again have a device being paid off still) and otherwise that’s €25 down the drain and I will have to get one of those pocket wifi router things - c’est la vie…
