The Pound is cheaper than it has been in over 30 years.

Are there only certain branches of banks that exchange dollars for pounds, a la the main downtown branch or something like that?

I have to wonder if the banks who do this will slightly "adjust" their exchange rate a little bit...

Most branches will not have a large amount of foreign currency, if they have any at all. You can place an "order" at the local branch and pick it up at the branch in a few days.

They may charge a nominal fee, but that is going to be the best option on actual currency exchange.

The dollar was already strong against the pound and euro. Its about 10% stronger right now so if you are going this summer I wouldn't stress about getting currency today. Neither the pound or the euro will regain much and may drop some more. IMO, What you will see happen in England especially is rampant price inflation since they import most everything. So while the dollar will be strong the prices will be higher....you'll break even.

We used our local Navy Fed Credit Union. My BIL that's going on the trip with us, he's in small town Illinois (my hometown) he had to order.

I know Wells Fargo carries foreign currency.
