Planning a trip to Italy and Switzerland in August and would welcome and recommendations on places to stay, things to do, etc. Thus far, itinerary looks like this:
-Fly into Naples, train down to Amalfi Coast
-3 days on Amalfi Coast (need to nail down which town(s) + Capri)
-Flex day to either stay on the Amalfi Coast or do a day in Pompeii/Naples
-Fly from Naples to Geneva, train over to Interlaken
-4 days in Bernese Oberland region (need to decide on Murren, Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Grindelwald, etc.)
-Fly to Zurich, spend the day/night and fly home
-Fly into Naples, train down to Amalfi Coast

Just got back yesterday from 14 days in Italy. Did Venice-Florence-Amalfi-Rome
Here are my suggestions.
Get a private car to take you to amalfi from Naples. Its $100 and well worth it.
We stayed in Praiano at an AirBNB, quiet town between amalfi and positano. very relaxing and isn't as crazy as capri and the others. very easy to get to the others spots via bus and ferries. don't stay in Sorrento - its huge compared to the others, JMP. make sure you stretch - so many stairs..
You can spend an afternoon in pompei on your way back to naples.
Naples is alright, I liked Florence a lot and highly suggest it if you've never been (Rome for the history too)

I just got back about 2 weeks ago from almost the same trip. Only difference is that we did Sorrento instead of Amalfi and added a night in Capri.

You could also do that water taxi. It's significantly cheaper and doesn't take very long

Florence was actually my least favorite stop

For the Amalfi, if you're a baller or are with a large group that would be up to splitting it, see about chartering a boat. Went on a family trip and we chartered a 60' catamaran for 2 nights. Left from Naples, sailed to Sorrento then Capri and spent the first night anchored in the Marina Piccola of Capri. Next day we sailed to Positano, then to Amalfi where we spent the second night. Had a van bring us from Amalfi to Ravello then to Salerno to catch a train back to Rome. Absolutely worth it if you can swing it.

Amalfi Coast - Stay in Positano. Beautiful town with lots to do and many excellent restaurants. Capri and the other towns along the coast are easily accessible by ferry. We spent a week there in 2014 and had a great time.

Beware of the people in Naples. That is one shady city. I was only there for a few hours on our way to Pompeii but I didn't have the greatest feeling walking around there.
