Taking family to Isla Mujeres this summer. Kids 17 & 18. Staying at Nautibeach Condos (hope it okay place) because kids. Son and I plan to schedule dive to MUSA one morning. Whole family plan to snorkle with the whale sharks. Are these worth doing? Recommendations on eats (local), drinks, etc.? Is it safe to go at at night? 8 - 11:00 not all night of course.

Looked through previous travel threads but most are pre covid. Not sure if things have changed.

TIA

really cool place, yall will have a blast and yes it is safe Island no matter what time day or night.

the whale shark tour is awesome, be prepared for the ride to get a little rough. They have to search for the whales so the it might be a 45min boat ride or a 1.5hr.

Rent a golf cart for the week. they have cracked down on DWI's and have semi check points sometimes. You will be fine if you are not acting crazy and have an open container in your possession but the passengers will be fine. note: you will have to leave your drivers lic with them as collateral, this is standard procedure for all the cart rental places. some are cheaper than others and some are nicer. You will be able to get a cart for the entire family to ride on.

Resto Del Mundo - best micheladas on island and a cool little bar.

La Paplapa del Capitan (outdoor style restaurant and bar at a cul-de-sac) -great price point, awesome mojitos

Mikes Pizza- there area ton of pizza places on the island lol. pizza is good, beer is cheap and the only place on island that has cold mugs.

The Joint- cool bar with good food and great frozen drinks

Shopping and drinks down Hildalgo

cash the dollar into Peso. this will save you 20-30% of your spending, play and shopping money

All of the beach bars are fun- basically you don't have to pay to enter just drink and eat at the establishment and you have access to their pools and beach areas.
Ill bump this thread tomorrow, my wife knows the names of the beach clubs

Explore and have fun.

Food.

Eat at Bastos. Mid island. Authentic. Cheap

Hidalgo Street

Dopi's - they have great lobster burritos

Fredy's - Fredy is a great guy and they put out a good plate of food

Stay away from the restaurants right on the beach at Playa Norte - They're more expensive and the food and service are subpar

There are a lot of great little places to eat on the island and particularly around Hidalgo Street.

Ballyhoo if you want seafood one night. It's right by the marina and has great sunset views

Javi's Cantina was great

As the other poster said I feel safe anywhere on the island at any time of day. Bastos is mid island where the locals live and I've never been bothered.

Punta Sur is a pretty cool place on the southern tip of the island. It has trails that go right down close to the ocean and the water is extremely violent there. The Joint is nearby with their frozen breakfast mojitos and good food.

Rent a golf cart for a day and explore. If you're staying near Playa Norte you can walk to a ton of places. Honestly, I wouldn't waste the money to rent a golf cart for the week. Up north there's so much within walking distance. If you decide you want a second golf cart day just do another daily rental.

...and don't accept the initial quoted rental price. Everything for sale or rent there from the local merchants is negotiable.

Will probably be doing an Excellence Playa Mujeras trip summer 2022, how easy/fast is it to get over to Isla for a day trip?

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I plan on getting a golf cart for at least one day. Is it easy to drive around as far as traffic or getting lost?

Can my 18 year old have a drink (one!) when we are out on the beach?

There's a road that goes all the way around the island. There are other roads but it's easy to get around and your GPS should work there. The only traffic is a few taxis, the locals and golf carts. Gringos can only rent golf carts.

Your 18 year old can buy as many drinks as he would like to have.

BehindU or anyone

Where do I cash the dollar into peso? I've read the airport exchange rate was not good. Is there a place at the ferry or on the island?

Also, are restaurants and such easy to find? Looking on google maps all of the buildings look similar and I'm not proficient in Spanish.

TIA

I get pesos at my bank at home. There are ATMs on the island as well.

Restaurants/bars are aplenty and are what puts food on the table of the owners’ families.

You will have no trouble finding them. Most are on Hidalgo street which runs right through the middle of the island. The south end of the island has a few spots to eat but is mostly residential

Q: Taking family to Isla Mujeres this summer.
A: Gonna be hot hot hot, embrace it and come back with a solid tan

Q: Kids 17 & 18. Staying at Nautibeach Condos (hope it okay place) because kids.
A: That is a good choice and is family friendly. You will be on the far northwest corner of the island. NOTE - playa norte is a topless beach and gets crowded with day-tripping tourists coming over from Cancun. See picture down below..

Q: Son and I plan to schedule dive to MUSA one morning.
A: Never been but from the photos it looks awesome.

Q: Whole family plan to snorkel with the whale sharks. Are these worth doing?
A: ABSOLUTELY AWESOME EXPERIENCE. June is a good month to go, July and August are peak months for seeing them.

Q: Recommendations on eats (local), drinks, etc.?
A: Lots of places to go, if it's your first time, I would suggest enjoying Hidalgo Street for dining and choose 1 night to eat off of the "strip". See picture down below.

Q: Is it safe to go at at night? 8 - 11:00 not all night of course.
A: EXTREMELY SAFE. The locals don't put up with any bullshite shenanigans and any local riffraff is dealt with by the locals. If tourists are hearing that Isla is dangerous, tourism will plummet and the locals won't have money to feed their families...so I assure that that place is very safe.

You may want to zoom in on these pictures to see the details or turn your phone sideways, I did them on my computer and of course things are much bigger on the big screen....

Last time we went some jackass took my key out of the cart while the wife and I where parked having a drink. We come out and I freak out because the key is gone, dude comes walking up (after about 10 minutes of me thinking Im fricked) and says he found the key on the ground and wants $20. I basically told him to get fricked and then he smiled and gave me the key back.

We’re doing the same next month. Did you end up going? Any tips/recs for getting there from Excellence and what you did once you got there?
