Wife and I are in the early stages of a trip to Ireland. Plan is to spend 2 days in Dublin and 3 days in the rest of the country, but am open to suggestions.

We would rent a car and drive the island after Dublin.

So any advice on where to stay in Dublin, what cities and towns to travel to, what to see, etc would be helpful.

You can't go longer than that? 5 days isn't enough to see Ireland.

That's pushing it as is. 2 travel days and 5 days in country. That's a week. Me taking off more than a week from work? Unpossible. An extra day is possible but unlikely.

We don't obviously need to see the whole country and wouldn't have time to.

Just hit the highlights in Dublin, go to some pubs, and see at least some of the rest of the country.

Have you considered flying to Belfast? There is a lot to do there and it is a beautiful city. I wasn't a huge fan of Dublin.

No hadn't considered it. We liked the idea of Dublin for a few reasons. The flights are better and cheaper. And you can pre-clear US customs on the way back in Dublin. Just seemed like a better base of operations.

My son is graduating from college next May and we are planning a trip to Dublin in Kate May 2017. Flights are not bad and probably stay at a Airbnb. Probably stay 5 nights also for same reasons as you.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Of course my son wants to sight see but is more interested in hitting as many pubs as possible.

Just wondering if anyone has anymore advice.

We are still deciding whether to go West, North, or South.

You can get to Galway on the west coast on the Motorway in like 2.5 hours from Dublin, its a straight shot. Use that as a base of operations to see the Cliffs of Moher and all that.

Also considering going to Killarney which is more beautiful but would be a 4 hour drive from Dublin.

We MAY do a day in Dublin, drive to Killarney, spend the day driving across the country, see the site saround Killarney, spend the night, drive up the coast, spend a night in Adare near Limerick, drive the Galway and see the cliffs, spend the night either there or in Doolin, and then fly out of either Dublin or Shannon. Not sure I want it to be that whirlwind.

Going to Ireland for 14 days in September. We are cutting out the top half of Ireland and doing a circle starting in Dublin then to Galway and then down the island back around to Dublin. Not really sure how that helps you but for 5 days I would probably stay relatively close to Dublin. Could you drive to Belfast/Galway in that time and back? Yes but it will be tight time frame
