I'm standing in customs line in Milan currently. Called AT&T and got their basic international plan for my phone before I left. Question: do I just leave data usage on? I have unlimited text, but only 120mb data...but you can't send a text without data roaming on. Not sure how exactly it works.

no... much easier to just buy a sim card at the airport. AT&T and their planned screwed me up. I purchased it and used it mainly for navigation and TripAdvisor to lok up places to eat/drink. Used city/hotel WiFi to look up sports, TD, FB, etc, but because that wasn't always reliable my bill came in at close to 600 bucks.

I have similar questions as my family is about to travel to Punta Cana.

A family member's friend swears by the magicJack magicApp for making calls and texting while traveling internationally. I need to research this more, but figured its worth posting for anyone familiar with this option.

Thanks!

I've never had to worry about the cost of calling/text/data because my travel is always work-related for me.

I know many folks on a budget like Whats-App.

It has has texting & cheap FaceTime options.

I'm just strolling around town with data roaming switched off. Turning it on when needed/not on wifi. Worked fine today.

I'd probably turn off data if you have a lot of "always on" Aps.

If you buy a SIM card at the airport... do you have to have your phone "Unlocked" for it to work properly?

I have an iPhone with AT&T if that matters.

You need to have it unlocked for it to work at all with another carrier. AT&T will unlock for free if your phone is off contract or not on an installment plan. Or you can get it unlocked through eBay if it is under contract. A bit shady but it works. Must do in advance of international travel.

I called AT&T at the airport to ask them this. They didn't seem very sure, even though it was an AT&T SIM card I was looking at for $60. The girl instead talked me into their lowest 30 day international plan for $30. It come with unlimited text and 120mb data - not much data, but if you leave roaming off and only switch it on when needed and get on wifi when possible, it's plenty. I'm on day 6 of a 13 day trip and have only used 17mb so far.

How does the data work in another country when using apple or google maps when renting a car to navigate you to a place you want to eat? Do you have to have separate sims or use your regular phone data?

This is why I booted AT&T for most of my company, Verizon $2 a day for Canada and Mexico and $10 a day for all other countries where they have plans, you get full access to all the data and features of your existing plan. You don't have to turn it on or off, if you use it you get charged, if you don't then no charge.
