Any suggestions on what area of town to stay, restaurants, and watering holes

West Hartford is where you want to be. Park Side brewing is a great little brew pub with good beer and food. In that same area is a Peruvian restaurant that I can't recall the name of but it was a James beard nominee, very casual place. Then there is a nice walkable area full of bars and restaurants with Max's Oyster bar being a great seafood spot.

Stayed in downtown Hartford for a wedding and it was one of the more depressing places I've been. The one good brewery downtown, Hog River, looks like it has gone out of business.
West Hartford seems much nicer.
