SO and I are going for 8 days. Any recs? I'd like to rent a car to check out some nearby cities. And what's the best way to get Colombian currency once we get there?

Also, a heads up, Spirit flights are dirt cheap from FLT/Miami to Central/South America.

Copa Airlines is $533 pp for the following trip in July:

DPT MSY @ 6:49 AM
5h 48m Total Flight Time
1 stop PTY
ARR CTG @ 12:37 PM

DPT CTG @ 1:31 PM
8h 56m Total Flight Time
1 stop PTY
ARR MSY @ 10:27 PM

I haven't flown Spirit, Copa's non-stop MSY-PTY is almost irresistible though for getting down into that part of the world from MSY.

Medellin might call me, its too close (one hour away by plane for ~$100/pp via Avianca).

I'd get my bank to get some Colombian peso currency for me before I left.
Check with your bank as to ATM exchange rates in Colombia.

Have a good time!

$553 isn't bad in the summer with Copa. One of my best friends is Colombian--he said the best places to visit in Colombia are the amazon, Cartagena, and the coffee triangle. He said Bogota is meh. Didn't ask him about Medellin, but with airfare so low I'll definitely be doing a Colombian amazon trip in the future and hopefully go to Medellin.

I paid $300 RT to Panama from Ft. Lauderdale in December (most expensive time of the year to go to South America). We're paying $170 RT to Cartagena from Ft. Lauderdale. Spirit's prices from FLT/Miami to that part of the world just can't be topped. It would cost me the same to fly from FLT to MSY

eta: if you're going to South America, I highly recommend using airbnb. We're renting a really nice condo right on the beach in Cartagena for $40/night. Insanely cheap.

Here's a link to an article on Colombian currency, etc.
Because of inflation, the largest bill they offer is around $37.00 US now (500,000 Pesos).
