Taking an Alaskan cruise at the end of may. One way northbound. Vancouver to Seward. Have plans made at every stop except the end. Last day of the cruise is Friday. My flight out of anchorage is on Monday.

I figured we would go to Kenai Fjords on that Friday morning. The train to anchorage is booked that day so I may rent a car in Seward instead. Any suggestions on where to go from seward before my flight out of anchorage?

In before: cruises are trashy.

I would go drive the Seward Highway to Anchorage, the Parks Highway to Denali then Fairbanks, the Richardson Highway to Glennallen, then the Glenn Highway back to Anchorage and then down to Seward again.

Pretty good bit of driving but can be done with May daylight. I think you’ll get enough of the coast on your cruise. Go to the Interior!

Exit Glacier (if you're a hiker, go up to the ice field)

Girdwood
Hatcher Pass
Homer

All are close to Seward or Anchorage.

Kenai Fjords might be overkill if you hit Glacier Bay or Icy Bay on your cruise.

I have taken the Vancouver to Seward route twice both times on Holland America. Loved it. I would highly recommend Kenai Fiords. The scenery is spectacular. You see whales wildlife glaciers and snow covered mountains. Unfortunately the day we were there the waves were so rough everyone got seasick and we had to cut the tour short.

Not going through glacier bay. The ship does go by the Hubbard Glacier, but we’re not doing the excursion to go closer since we decided to do Kenai.

Looking at it some more today, if we get to anchorage on that Friday night, I was contemplating driving to talkeetna early Saturday to have a day at Denali. I know you can make an entire trip out of Denali, but are there any specific places/areas we should target if we go this route?

One time when we disembarked in Seward we took the train from Anchorage to the Denali Park and stayed a few days. One night we went white water rafting. I say night because we got back at about 10:30 pm and it was still broad daylight. One day we took a sightseeing tour of the park.

Book a halibut fishing trip in Seward.

A day, not a lot. Wildlife bus trip takes all day, rafting is available. Talkeetna is worth a day though. You can see the mountain from there. I'd spend a day in Talkeetna before spending a day in Denali, unless you have plans to get into the back country.

Yep, don't do Kenai Fjords on smaller vessels if the seas are active and you're prone to motion sickness. I've seen an entire boat full of barfing people on that trip before.

Its an awesome experience if the weather is cooperating though.

I'm doing that same exact cruise in July.

We are spending an extra 3 days in Seward and have booked a fishing guide and things to do before heading to Anchorage for the flight back.

This.
I would also go to the Alaska Native Heritage Center

I don’t think cruises are trashy, but they’re too leisurely for my taste - especially to a place like Alaska.

You don’t have to go hunt a grizzly with a pocket knife, but a trip to Alaska solely by cruise ship without getting out on your own into the Interior to feel a little bit of the remote and vast wilderness just seems like a cheap way to experience the state.

Ling Cod are a lot more fun to catch and they taste better.

Catch some 50 lbers but take home the 30 lbers.

Eta....they probably have combo trips OP.

So I'm going one way Vancouver to Seward on Norwegian in the end of July. My trip ends on a Monday. Booked a fishing trip for lingcod and rockfish one day, will goof off one day and have train tickets for Wednesday night and flights back.

I'm looking forward to it. Have fun.

We are going up in July. If you want to go fishing I would get on it pretty quick. Guides are booking up. Also the highway into Denali is closed at some point. Not sure how far into the park it’s closed.

You can get roughly halfway in on the Denali Rd. Road will not be repaired before summer is over. Slide happened in Polychrome Pass area.

I would do this ASAP. Shortage of rental cars in AK.

Some folks are having luck with Turo. But if he's going to Anchorage the train is a much much better option. If they have a standby reservation I would do that.

I will have to check it out. I pay about 65 a month for parking at Merrill Field and about 80 a month for insurance on a vehicle I use 5-6 times a year and probably don’t put 100 miles a year on. Rentals are just difficult to get last minute in the summer.
