Headed to Amsterdam to start. Then Germany, France, and Switzerland.

It's an eight day cruise. I'm just wondering if anyone has been on that cruise line and what to expect.

Will be my first cruise ever

My parents did the river cruise a few years ago and loved it. They're going back in January for the ocean cruise, Barcelona to London.

Mostly older folks on board, 50+.

Thanks, I will search on here and see. I was kinda roped into it by my wife and son. I'm actually not looking forward to it.

My wife and I went on the same cruise in Nov a few years back. Anne Frank museum was very crowded. The Van Gogh museum was really good. Go on the excursion at the windmill site if you are there long enough.

Wife and I did that cruise in the opposite direction this past summer. I highly recommend it. That was our second Viking cruise and we've already signed up for our third.

Thanks for response. I was drunk and watching LSU baseball when my wife and oldest suggested this vacation.... I was like "hell yeah". Now I'm stuck.

Glad to hear it's a good time

LOL! We're doing that one next week. 4 days in Amsterdam to start. Doing the Rhine Getaway, then spending a week in Colmar France thereafter.

I've posted a number of items on Viking Cruises. LINK

Love 'em. This will be our 7th cruise with Viking (6th river cruise).

River:
- Atla (Romantic Danube - 2017)
- Modi (Passage to Eastern Europe - 2019)
- Astrild (Christmas Along The Elbe - November 2021)
- Radgrid (Paris & The Heart Of Normandy Paris to Paris - November 2022)
- Hemming (Portugal's River Of Gold Porto to Porto - April 2023)

Ocean:
- Venus (Viking Homelands Bergen to Stockholm-May 2022)

If you go into it with the right frame of mind, you'll have a blast. Don't know how old you are, and it doesn't matter, just be aware that it "tends" (NOT always) to draw an older crowd. Let's say upper 50's to mid 60's on AVERAGE, with outliers either way.

What you'd love:

1. Great value for what you get. Particularly the bulk airfare options. Once you're there, it's cheap to go before or after your cruise on a train, or even a plane. AND, they throw all sorts of incentives to make you come back, so it gets cheaper and cheaper.

2. They essentially do EVERYTHING for you. Even if you're an experienced international traveler, it's nice to have someone meet you at the airport. Take your luggage. Get you situated.

3. Once you unpack, you're done for the week.

4. Service is genuinely friendly and competent.

5. Food is very good. Great selections and varieties.

6. We always buy the "Silver Spirits" package so we can have drinks whenever we want, and higher end brands. (They will serve wine/beer at meals and it's still good.)

7. All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise.

8. They tend to book cruises based upon nationalities, so you'll most likely be with Americans, maybe a few Brits. (This can be good or bad depending upon how you view your travel goals.)

What you might not like:

1. Age differential potentially as noted. I will say its kind of cool to see older people reaping their rewards for all the years of sacrifice and living life. Looking at age tends to be an American thing and it's not as much a thing in Europe.

2. You don't have to do the included, or optional, tours, but you start getting in the groove of doing that day after day. Waking up at 7am, breakfast, get on the bus. You'll want to, but note that.

3. You may, or may not, have some extended time on your own in certain ports to explore.

4. The cruise goes by far faster than you ultimately want it to!

It's sometimes said that the passengers on these river cruises are either newly wed or nearly dead.

I enjoy the variety of people we've met on our cruises.

We've been on 6 Viking Cruises in Europe...5 on the rivers. We've done the Rhine cruise that you're going on, but in the opposite direction, from Basal-Swiss to Amsterdam. It's a great cruise, with great excursions, including the windmills, cathedrals in Cologne, etc. You'll see endless castles and have options for evening excursions, which are great...we went to the cheese/dairy farm the night of the day's windmill tour.
WW2 history galore. The ship has no more than 190 guests, is very relaxing and you'll get to know folks. No kids. Very upscale. First rate. We have 2 more scheduled now. You'll see lots of stork nests, and maybe some storks too.
